To be fair:

a) Eyebrows were being raised at Santambrogio before Di Luca's positive was reported.

b) He was flying before the Giro so maybe early peaking is a factor?

Early peaking is definitely a factor I think. He's been in peak, or close to, form since TA. And he hasn't had the chance to be the #1 leader until this year, so he might not be able to hold form for this long yet.

Maybe he/they heard the Di Luca thing before it all came out and playing it safe.

He (his ds) got a visit from the giro direction and they told him to chill and flush the remainder of the **** he was using, for the sake of the integrity of the race. He merely complied and they can count on future wild cards.

This. I also think it would have happened even without Di Luca, or maybe it had already happened before his positive.

Did Santambrodgio flush the bloodbags he had left after his stage win? Dropped on the first few k's of the tre cime climb now.

This year was just a test. Next year he will add the blood bags and podium for sure.

I have no idea if Santo is or is not doping, but the drop of can just as eeasily be explained by the fact that he is feeling the effects of three weeks racing.

new era of cycling!

I wonder if the DS has the agreement on paper, because now with the positive, the Giro direction might want to upend the deal.

He's been suspended before:

Rui COSTA tested positive for the use of Methylhexanamine in the Portuguese Time Trial Championships on 25 June 2010. In October 2010, he was provisionally suspended by the Portuguese federation. After 5 months, he was cleared to compete again: he did not get a ban, but lost his results in the National Championships.

Not just presumed - they actually provided the supplement, which was proven to be contaminated.
^^^This and the fact that Costa is a solid but unspectacular pro narrowly winning a race that suits, where the big names are somewhere else (Dauphine) or keeping the powder dry for the TdF gives him some benefit of the doubt IMO.

Of course Movistar isn't clean, but that doesn't mean that particular incident was about doping.

That's it, I doubt he was digging to deep into the white lunch bag as he still has to drag Valverde and Quintana around France for two weeks. He'll need to be somewhat fresh so he can pull those two up the mountains, at least until the real action kicks off.
