Whenever de lie is racing the race thread is always full of the same 3 or 4 Belgians complaining that he is too far back, that he doesn't look good, that he's wasting energy, that he's isolated, that hes gone over the limit that he's not gonna have any energy at the end etc.

And then he just wins

Imagine wanting a race to reward aggression instead of doing nothing until the sprint.
The race does reward aggression. To induce good racing, you need more than one path to the overall victory. Whether sprints or TTs, the point is that the aggressors have something they must overcome.

If you see how this race was raced and won it becomes quite clear there was basically one path to the victory.

This race has degraded immensely, now only being 5 stages and it's beyond telling that even guys like Van Aert, who does not have significant goals in the rest of the season, is skipping it.

While the top 2 managed both, I think attacks and sprints count as two paths. The amount of bonus seconds here meant that it didn't just come down to who was strongest at the hardest point in the race.

As I said, I wasn't talking about GC, only that stage. He won the stage so the tactics were solid.
ADL won today and wrapped up the GC.
This is a stage race and they rode for the overall victory. Also two days ago.

The race got lucky with crosswinds. If not, its honestly quite an underwhelming route, so I somewhat agree with Rick. Race should be 7-8 days and feature a timetrial, Limburg stage, Ardennes stage and a Flanders stage, that would be really cool. Just looking at the stages, this race is just really watered down compared to what it could be - despite great race this race!

The quality of a victory can be measured by the name of the second, so this is a pretty good win for De Lie. He played a game of poker and came out with a full house.

Normally I don't like it when the bonus seconds are decisive, but this was exciting. For a one-week race a course like this can work well.

Bonus seconds didn't decide the outcome.

Why would it be luck if you put your first place in places where the winds blows hard almost all the time? Also I would say they were unlucky, cause the wind wasn't hard enough to actually get serious echelons.

Oh, thank you for clarifying.

I'll make sure to remember that we are not allowed to talk about stages in stage races, only the GC.

MvdP seemed pretty happy for a guy who shouldn't be happy about winning a stage that doesn't matter.

can, and did.
MvdP won the stage. Someone else commented on the stage, and I replied about the stage.
Simple.
No, because the stage is part of a whole. In a stage race, you race with GC in mind if you aim for winning that. Those two things cannot be compartmentalised.

As the 'someone else', this is simply not true. This is the chain of posts before you replied to mine:
It's always a shame when the obvious favourite rides a tactically poor race and wins anyway.
Lol why? You want Vdp to wait for the sprint and be a boring rider?
Should either have let Del Grosso come back when the gap was 10 seconds so that Alpecin would have had two GC cards or attacked on Denderoordberg to try and give himself a gap on GC. Nothing to do with being boring or not.
