He was 5th in the U23 Tour of Flanders, winner of the GP della Liberazione, winner of the De Gasperi Trophy, 2nd in the GP Industria del Marmo and 13th in the Baby Giro (4th in the 3rd Stage), among other results. Shame I missed the beginning of his season !

If anyone has the full results of the U23 Italian Nats, I'll be grateful. Would like to know what Silvestri did.

He wasn’t good the last few weeks but he can hold on. About Rob Peeters, I’ve already been glad for weeks. Joeri Adams also has rhythm in the legs. Micki van Empel is admirable. If you know that this fellow had a shoulder dislocated in Serbia, then he is back on schedule.”

22 Kevin Pauwels: 8th in Stage 3 (Mountains), 4th in Stage 4 (Maurits Lammertink attacked in the first of the final laps. Pauwels attacked a bit later to bridge the gap with about half a dozen riders but to no avail. They were caught after 5km but not Lammertink), 5th in the Point classification
32 Jiri Polnicky: 20th in Stage 3 (Mountains), in the 8 rider breakaway in Stage 4 for 60km and was first on the 1st climb of that stage.

Micki Van Empel DNF Stage 4 has been racing through, with a brace around his shoulder !!! and was still 61th in the mountain stage 3’53” behind the winner and 53” behind Rabon !
Tijmen Eising DNF Stage 4 but soloed for 70km in Stage 2 and then caught & dropped by the peloton and 9th in the Mountain Classification despite retirement.
Klaas Vantornout DNF Stage 4 but 4th in Stage 3 (Mountains)
Rob Peeters DNF Stage 4 though he was 2nd on the first climb of that stage, 18th in Stage 3 (Mountains)
Joeri Adams DNF Stage 4 29th in mountainous Stage 3 (s.t. as Rabon)
Arnaud Jouffroy DNF Stage 4 but it was his first road race in a year and he really suffered but De Bie said he was him improving every day.

Sunweb-Revor 20th in the TTT (Merlier and Aernouts dropped), Telenet-Fidea 21st (van Empel dropped). TTT annihilated all ambition for a good GC for riders of both teams.
Tim Merlier crashed 10km before finish in Stage 2 and came back in the peloton. He didn’t finish Stage 3.
The Telenet-Fidea squad had trouble in getting to Prague since their flight from Eindhoven was cancelled. They had to hurrily find a B-plan and came to Prague from Amsterdam. Then they had to wait half an hour at the airport in Prague because the air conditioning system was still in the plane. They arrived at around 1.30am at their hotel.
“Stage 3 was a 198km long stage, 2800m slope, 5.5 hours of racing” said Vantornout (http://www.czechcyclingtour.cz/CCT2011-3.html). Three guys went on an early break and the bunch didn’t try catch them. On the final circuit, they had to climb a cobbled hill. Klaas attacked in the last lap and two guys followed, whom he beat in the sprint to finish 4th. Pauwels came in a group behind shortly afterwards but he said he had to do all the work.

Ex-crosser Paul Voss is 4th overall.

Nys was long in the lead, alone with a 1’ gap on a trio with Van Hoovels, Meeusen and Pauwels but then had cramps and Pauwels came back before the last lap and build a gap of 1’22” in just one lap. Everybody says it was a big upset but those who have followed Pauwels’ performances the last few weeks knew he could do it.

Sven Nys said that he thought the technical course was in favour of a crosser. In the end, he felt he had nothing left in the tank and Pauwels is a deserved winner. The best won.

More and more crossers are chosing for MTB. Pauwels said before the Nats that he’d rather race MTB than the road because on the road you need a bit of luck to win while in MTB the best riders pretty much always win it.

It’s Kevin’s second national title in MTB after the one in 2002 as junior. His first win for Sunweb.

52 Kevin Pauwels: In Stage 1, after Eising’s group was caught Kevin went in a break of 30 riders. They were caught with a fistful of km to go. 2nd of Stage 2 in a group of 8 riders that had a 10 second advantage on the peloton, winner of stage 3 during the same day (at 4pm started). A group of 14 riders with Kevin among them had 3’ on the peloton with 70km to go when they started climbing the Mur de Bretagne. With two laps to go, Andreas Frisch attacked. Kevin went into a counter with Freddy Bichot and Brian Megens. They caught the leader with 8km to go. In the final kilometer, the group was but 15” ahead of the peloton. Bichot started the sprint too early and Kevin won.

Steve got a last minute wild card. He was nowhere to be found for the last 3 months. He actually got a hepatitis on April 17 right after the Tro Bro and had to pull out of the Circuit de Lorraine, to retire from the Tour of Luxembourg and to pull out of the French Nats. By July 27 he was expected to come back at best late August. So he’s back earlier than expected. He’s a Vosgian himself.

On s’est lancé le défi avec mon mécanicien et ma famille, et je me suis pris au jeu. C’était super sympa. J’étais dans un bon jour et j’ai pris un beau départ, en plus du plaisir sur le parcours.

As far as I know the new cyclocross starts next Wednesday with the Cross Vegas. I'll still give you a last update because I realized that a handful of top crossers raced the Van Steenbergen Memorial last Wednesday and I couldn't left it go unnoticed. But I do realize that on the whole, they're no longer really active at this time of the year, which is logical.
