It is him. He used to commentate on football as well. If I'm not mistaken, mainly doing English language commentary for the Italian leagues.
Oh lord, does he get all excited when there is a throw-in and then shout "NO NO NO THIS COULD BE BAD" if a player goes down injured?

Ok dumb question but who actually is this guy? Is he an ex-rider, I can't find anything about him if he is? Or is he just some random fan who's somehow ended up a cycling commentator? If so, where do I sign up?
Why, do you look forward to someone starting a thread about how infuriating your voice, knowledge, credentials are?
Rob Hatch is just a guy who went to broadcasting school and has been having on-air conversations for nearly 20 years now. Have you failed to notice the tendency to pair ex-pros with professional talkers for commentating sports? Pretty sure it's common practice across all sports and all geographies. It's not easy to get Sean Kelly to say something beyond, "this is the real real hard part".
Just observed this thread OP and felt for adding a few cents here.
And sorry if I'm mixing things up here (it's been a very long time since I've listened to Mr. Hatch myself), but as I understand the appeal here is that a commentator should rather not make the attempt - than dying in it, if he/she shows any signs of being on the outside here anyway.
So that he ends up with no one understanding him/her in the end - and that's the charge here, right?
Myself started with my interest in various sports before school a big part being all the unfamiliar names; Notice them. Taste them on my tongur. And later, when I learned to read, to notice the nuances in the composition of letters and guess the pronunciation, becoming quite easier when learning different languages in ground school.
It wasn't just about the obvious respect and humility, but just as much about "tasting" other pronunciations and trying to adapt the tongue to them.
For several decades, I also needed the approach as a green engineer, which was sent around the world. It is now even more fun to try the local language, in addition to getting to the core faster and avoiding critical misunderstandings, so basically you are more "present" by using the local language.
Thus, I also enjoy the few commenters with real language skills and make a virtue of respecting the correct pronunciation of family names.
The second is just hopelessly disrespectful in my world. Especially if, on top of that, you get a big fat hire for it, it can quickly turn on me when the host has fallen asleep mentally.
But far worse with a host who just shoots from the hip constantly, so he's absolutely sure no one understands him anymore.
I find this guy Rob Hatch so annoying.
Is he English or some other nationality. Why does he have to keep telling us he's multi lingual, by his incessant over pronunciation of names and places. Who's he trying to impress. It's almost unwatchable with him at the mike.

This is one of the greatest traditions of the forum!
I honestly find him very good, specially compared to the Kirby alternative.
At least his pronunciation of names of Slovenian cyclists is very accurate and its always very refreshing to see English speaking commentators actually putting some effort and showing respect to actually pronounce things the correct way.
