He was able to drop everyone (except Pogacar) multiple times. He looked superb following Pogacar on most bergs. He only cracked on the last Kwaremont, which may have had something to do with following Pogacar relentless accerelations on every berg, don't you think? Do you know the term cumulative fatigue?

I'm not denying that an illness can hamper your fitness though. Yes, it could've affected him. But we really don't know if the outcome would've been different. Being sure of that is a very naive approach.
There were two overwhelming favourites before the race. Mvdp had an illness. We don't know how it would have played out if he wasn't sick. It would have been closer. We accept that the Pog won but many of us are left wondering what would have happened if Mvdp was not sick. And yes, a sick Mvdp was better than the rest, but not as good as the Pog.

The whole lead group set the fastest Kwaremont cobble time by 10 seconds (2nd time up). Other climb records were set by Pogacar on Koppenberg and Oude Kruisberg, although MVDP (doesn't upload to Strava) would have set the same time in both instances. Notably he also set KOMs for some longer segments including the final 40k of the race. So the climbing was impressive but not crazy, he just never let off the gas.
Climbing times are gonna be very dependent on race circumstances, and while the average speed was high. The race had been the easiest it has been before the 2nd Kwaremont

I adore mvp and love to see him in races, but this is the narrative his camp is pushing (especially his Dad). It’s really about legacy at this point and standing amongst cycling gods. MVP can lose a pivotal race in that scenario and it doesn’t really count in the context of history

more calories in eggs come from fat than protein. Are you going to call that lean?
No, but if you're at say 3000 kcal daily intake, then 2 eggs (+- 140 kcal) is quite meaningless. Of course eating is important for racing cyclists, but the amount of energy we intake is so big that good general food, up to a point, gives also mental recovery better that bars, powders, gels aso.

I agree, but let's be honest: every camp is prone to using this narrative, regardless of who the rider is.

Nevertheless, his dad should take it down a notch or two. He seems to be Mathieus spokesperson. All due respect for him as a former rider and a general nice guy: he's really really not savvy enough to play that role.
