Missed the first half due to travel. Saw the second half and France were great. Haronordoquy, Dusautroir and Rougerie were immense in the part I saw. Best team won the cup, and great to see Muliaina on the podium celebrating.
What happened to Kruden?

What happened to Kruden?

He hyper-extended his right knee in a tackle in the first half.

Does not sound good. Testament to the depth of New Zealand, that they could replace 3 fly halfs through the tournament.

I'm still amazed that Harinordoquy didn't start right from the beginning of the RWC.

Chapeau to the French. They couldnt really win it though, not in New Zealand on their territory. Kiwis needed this, but France earned everyones respect and probably deserved to win the match.

France were probably better, and when you factor in the referee missing NZ offsides in the second half on top of that. But the best team for the last few years got a deserved win for their overall play in the tournament.

Can't agree that France were better. All Blacks missed kick after kick, and not really difficult ones either. It makes a huge difference to the way the game is played because with the scores tight and so much at stake, the game stays attritional, meaning that it stays tight.

France's progress in the knock-out stages was marked by their opposition being unable to land kicks when it mattered and it got them to within a point of the title.

It 's reminiscent of the way that the 1991 final has been rewritten as England's folly of moving away from their familiar but limited brand of 9-man rugby. The truth of the matter is that John Webb missed his kicks. This meant that as the game wore on, Australia knew that England had to run the ball and so made defending easier and giving away penalties went unpunished. I'm not claiming that England deserved to win that one, just that if a team doesn't convert its chances, it doesn't matter how they play. But at the same time, the scoreboard dictates how each team tries to play.

Harinordoquy claims Lievermont was 'lost'

Imanol Harinordoquy says the French team ignored coach Marc Lievremont at the World Cup because he was "lost".

The World Cup runners-up came in for criticism after some poor performances in the pool stages, losing to Tonga and New Zealand before reaching the final.

Lievremont called some of his squad "spoiled brats" after they went against his instructions not to celebrate their semi-final victory over 14-man Wales.

"He was lost, I will not miss him," said number eight Harinordoquy.

"After the defeat against Tonga I did not attach too much importance to what Marc said."

France were also fined £2500 for advancing on the Haka.

Fined for an aggressive response to the haka, which everybody knows is a gentle invitation to afternoon tea  I thought it really built up the atmosphere.

I can't understand that, do New Zealand reserve the right to intimidate opponents. It's not like the joke of a hockey Haka, these guys are pretty scary people.

Got the fine value wrong, from some sad newspaper. 2500 it is.

Shane Williams' final test today.
Wales leading 3 0. Rhys Priestland penalty.
6-3 HT O'Connor playing at Fly half.

Shane Williams scores with his final play in international rugby. Wales lose 18-24 after Australia went mental in the early part of the second half.

Australia were clinical when Wales went down to 14 men and deserved to win. Some positive things from the game. Iain Evans looked really solid in the 2nd row (not a player I've seen much of), Faletau was strong all round and Matthew Rees looked sharp returning from injury.

Sad to see Bilbo go. He has such a love for the game. It was a fitting touch that he scored in the final minute. Diolch yn fawr, Shane.

The match wasn't telecast here and I had to follow it on the radio and a ticker, so some of the details are sketchy. Was this Australia better than what we saw in the World cup?

Fitting end for Bilbo, the last minute was live on the radio. The atmosphere after the try seemed brilliant.

Shane was in tears during the national anthem, very nervous at the start of the game and trying too hard to do something special. I can't really compare this Australian performance with the World Cup as the match was basically a testimonial and the first half was very subdued.

The reaction from the crowd to Shane's try was electric. Shane got the ball about 15-20m out after drifting from his wing to the centre of the line, got round the Australian centre and somersaulted while putting the ball down.
