Fairly common..shimano has a patent for 14s cogset, Campagnolo has one for post 'Bullet' shifter 'grip-shift'..

just trying to protect their stuff, why FSA won't have a electronic groupset this year. Why Campagnolo has hard wired batteries..shimano connector patent. Why shimano is the only rear hub with the FH body bolted to the hub body-patent.
