So when you look in the mirror are you also looking down the road? Can't be done Your attention is where you look including the mirror. I have seen those mirrors that plug into the ends of your bars. When you look there, you see the road below and a very small image of what is close behind. You won't be looking down the road or where you are going except around the edges of your field of view. Helmet mirrors poke out eyes in crashes. There is a dot mirror that fixes to your glasses and that might offer some of the Utility but they are currently the only legal mirrors too.

%99.999 of the time your peripheral vision is enough to know what is around you. Yesterday he looked back to see the limits of his vision, IE as far back as he could. no bike mounted mirror would have given him enough resolution to determine a motorcycle from a bike. A handle bar mirror would require the rider to get really close and concentrate on the image to use a mirror to see that far back...

Never mind this thread is for people that have no real clue. Mirrors are dangerous too and have hazards that just complicate this issue, that really isn't an issue.

absolutely true Plus 1

imagine going over a race like the cobbles of paris - roubaix and your mirror constantly out of position and you trying to adjust it .. cant be done without taking hands off the bars . useless totally .

Is the original poster even a bike rider , definitely not a racer , this is obsurd .

What does that have to do with the whole discussion? The guy asked a question, it wasn't so great, but it got answered. You don't need to keep bashing him... Let's just nip this in the bud now.

I don't like being a f*cking diplomat.

As far as I know racing motorbikes don't have mirrors.

That's correct.

Mirrors would be one more thing to get hooked up in, and one more thing to fall off the bike.

Man, you guys don't have much imagination - someone says "mirrors" and all you can picture is mirrors sticking out the side like on a motorcycle?? Who says the mirrors have to stick out? Not saying that mirrors would be a good idea - might be too distracting for one thing - but I'm sure someone could come up with a workable mirror that doesn't interfere with the rider or pose a hazard to those around him.

Even a mirror like this is still not a good idea; it would be difficult to check (small size of mirror) and could be distracted easily.

In almost every dangerous racing sport with multiple participants like formula 1, moto GP and other racing sports, rear view mirrors are obligatory for safety reasons.

Yesterday, one of the most likable riders in road racing died because of the lack of mirrors on his bicycle.

How long do we have to wait and how many riders have to die until UCI finally changes the rules and makes mirrors obligatory in cycling, too?
(As this is obviously a trolling thread)

No - can you imagine the carnage when the likes of Pozatto and Di Luca are whizzing along checking their hair and eyebrows, Gilbert squeezing zits or EBH constantly checking his upper lip to see if he has hit puberty yet?

Maybe they should use mirrors in horse racing - all you have to do is staple some mirrors to the horses ears.

It has everything to do with it . Because its usually the non bike riding public that have nothing better to do than to make rules and regulations that change the way the real bike riders/racers want the sport of cycling to move forward . This creates issues that would not be present if they were to keep their noses out of it .
Secondly they tend to not care at all , just if they can make life miserable for bike riders because they themselves dont really like bike riders .
I really dont want to ride around again with bells , whistles , 6 foot flags , reflective tape , mirrors , horns , lights in the day time . I dont want to become a circus clown again because one person died in a race .
IN most parts of the non cycling world , the issues come up all over again and the media and well to do groups go overboard . We have to start all over again calming down the rush of safety zealots .
Never mind how many people die in road accidents in cars and trucks and buses or how many in other sports . One cyclist dies and its a frenzy and all must be changed .

The fact that he asked the question at all , says he hasnt ridden past the corner store or is very new to cycling .

I'm not so sure it a troll thread. Maybe nit a great idea, but I doubt Tornadin meant to upset people with this suggestion.

Not a troll thread, more of a fred thread.

Ever notice that the guys with the helmet mirrors are the ones on a crusade to convince all cyclists that they need mirrors -- that mirrors are God's gift to cycling. I suspect the real motivation is that if they get more to use mirrors, they won't stick out like the freds that they are.
