hey, hang on, the pay thing is only for box hill and the finish (obv) right?

Well were all your friends willing to go all the way down to Box hill, to see it? would they not be content with just any spot on the route?

Not after I told them that by far the best place to watch it was Box Hill. If the tickets are only £10-£15, I'll probably think about going anyway. Will they have a big screen at Box Hill? If so, then it'd be quite cool to catch it live, then watch the finale with a huge crowd.

Otherwise I'll just stay at home, or try and convince the pub to put it on.

Box Hill is the premier viewing location isn't it? You get to see the race pass 9 times as opposed to just the once at any other point on the course. Like you, if there's a big screen up, I'll apply. Should be a cracking atmosphere.

Are there still tickets available for Box Hill? I would think/hope they would sell-out fast. Sounds like a great place to watch/cheer during what will be a once in a lifetime experience for many of the spectators. Will it be ok to chalk write on the road? What time will people start queueing up to get in?

They only announced that it would be a charged, ticketed event yesterday. Previously it was going to be free, until they remembered that people will go nuts for the Olympics, so would be prepared to buy them.

Tickets go on sale May 17th, apparently.

To the poll question, I'm pretty new to following cycling, and I often wonder why there is such an opposition from fans to charging to watch - especially when the sport is in such a seemingly precarious financial position.

65 years of a welfare state later, it's hardly surprising people genuinely think they're entitled to enjoy a product for free and expect the mass of taxpayers to foot the bill. Nevermind that the even at the prices offered, it is still receiving an enormous subsidy.

They were always going to be ticketed. Making people pay for them at least insures that the people who get the tickets will show up.

Not really if they got gobbled up by corporate entities like every other event

If you want to ensure people turning up then distribute them through cycling clubs ?

Charges

I personally do not agree or disagree with charging to watch the Box Hill circuit as this was always going to happen it was a case of when not if the charge was announced.

My Understanding of the situation is a little cloudy though.

As understand it The National Trust owns the Box Hill site, So surely all the profit
should go to them but as I understand it they have even had the road re-surfaced and still won't get any of the money.

Surely its like FIFA charging me to watch the world cup final played in my own garden.

Will you then get to choose any spot you want to on bh or be assigned one?

**** it, even though it will be boring to be there on my own, Ill apply for a ticket.

 The thing I dont get is that unless I am missing something, originally you could only get onto Box hill if you were a member of British Cycling.
So why is everyone complaining about it at least they can buy tickets now...

Or is that not true?

Definitely worth it if a person is already going to the Olympics, or is a local who has a bug to see some great bike racing.
Myself I would rather go to Box Hill, then go to any Classics or stage races, excepting any stage going through the Dolomites or Pyrenees, just because I think the italians and Basques would be welcoming and gregarious.
Being so close to world City London, think of the great variety of fans at Box Hill. Newbies, and ex pros all congregating.

I walked up Box Hill on a school trip, and I can assure you that it's not exactly got the scenery of the alps.

Is it steep/hard at all???

Well, I would be quite out of breath, and my legs would hurt at the top of it. I don't race though, or even train at all seriously. If it were tough enough to make a difference, they wouldn't have bussed 200 13-year-olds there in year 9 for a walk.

I remember the day quite well - me and two other guys spent the entire time dicking around making fun of our teacher, who basically just lost control of the group. Then the next day it's a day in the "withdrawal unit" and a detention. Withdrawal was basically solitary confinement - utter boredom for 6 hours.

When I first did it I had just gotten my road bike, and I thought it was very hard. Now, 6 months later, I'm still not truly fit but I can find a pace to ride it without actually suffering so I guess it's a very easy ride for a pro.
