Why not? What type of course did he demonstrably prove he couldn't win on this year? Really steep stuff, stages with repeated HC climbs, getting stronger deep into the last week - he was ticking every box. Which part of the as yet unconfirmed Giro route will not suit him?

When did he prove anything in steep climbs???

The 2012 Tour had some of the lamest mountain stages and only 3 MTfs, none of which were HC.

In contrast The 2012 Giro is strongly rumoured to have 5 MTFs and 7 Hilly stages including the 2013 Worlds' circuit.

The Giro climbs are usually much steeper than Tour climbs even though one of the climbs will be Galibier ( Official & not used in this years' tour).

Good luck to Wiggins if he wants to try the Giro next year.

OK, great. So please point out where Wiggo lost out in those areas last year and where they feature in next year's Giro route.

wiggins sucked everywhere in the giro he rode. also last years vuelta angliru was a joke. basically he never did anythign good in steep climbs. not to mention he lacks explosivity and agility and steering skills to do well in hilly and explosive stages, that the giro is full of.

Wigans been training a lot in mt neck of the woods which is full of short steep hills. He has shown decent improvment there, however he has never shown anything on giro type mountains(see angry louie for 1) the assymetric rings and overgearing?

You dont exactly rate nibali either do you, and that looks very likely to be his strongest opponent. Or are you going to spend another giro lead-up 6 months laughing at everyone who thinks rujano wont win the giro?

Wiggo hasn't done anything on really steep gradients, on Angrilu last year the steep part was where he cracked. And the big reason why he won the tour this year was because of all the TT km. I don't think Wiggins will be able to survive on the giro mountains. :D Especially if it is a hilly route.

9th indeed despite working for cavendish and uran. especially the latter was pointles.s henao was amazing onthe stelvio henao was one of the best. his recuperation and consistancy is amazing. he is also clearly working on his gearing which means he won;t suffer in steep climbs anymore. this could already be seen in burgos. unfortunately he was totally abused working for froome in the vuelta.

And yet he was still able to place 14th, which is pretty good considering he had to work for Froome.

nibali stands no chance winning the giro. unless participation is even worse than this year. besides he will go for the tour surly

I agree, he has zero chance of winning the Giro next year. Because he won't be participating, instead he'll do the Tour again as he should. ;)

Why would he do the tour instead? He has a better chance of winning the Giro than he does the Tour. Plus doing the Giro he will have plenty of time to recover before going to the Vuelta to prepare for worlds.

He was 3rd in the past Tour which didn't suit him that well. Next year's will be better for him. If he wasn't a true Tour contender, sure he should do what you say, it'll make more sense. Finally, do you think Astana will leave their best GC rider out of next year's Tour? I hope not.

How about an avatar-bet then?
If Nibali participates in the Giro next year, you will have an avatar of my choice during that Giro.
If Nibali DOESN'T participate in the Giro next year, I will have an avatar of your choice doing that Giro.
ok?

Hmmm...it's tempting. Let me think about it, but let's re-word it:

* If Nibali DOES participate in the Giro 2013, and DOES NOT participate in the Tour 2013, you will have an avatar of my choice during that Giro.

* If Nibali DOES NOT participate in the Giro next year, and DOES participate in the Tour 2013, I will have an avatar of your choice doing that Giro.

How's that?

Almost done deal.
How can we decide who shall wear the other's avatar in the Giro, when we don't know whether or not he will participate in the Tour? He could - God forbid - have an injury/ban and not participate in the Tour, even though it is the plan.

Therefore my proposal is:
A: The original terms
OR
B: The avatar period is during the Tour

I'm game for both :)
(..Let's hope Nibali isn't :p)

Come on lads, plenty of threads about Nibbles and Wiggo, let's talk about the great SERGIO instead, starting with a win on saturday hopefully.

You're right, let's not hi-jack this thread. Sergio needs to be treated decently.

The most impressive thing about this guy is that he keep his great shape since middle of july when he was riding well in Poland. I bet he could finish 4th on Vuelta this year if he didnt have to work for Froome. And he's my no.1 for Beijing. I really wish him a win, he deserves that after such a great first season.

I wonder how much he may improve next year...

i've read that in of those amateurs cronoscalata's the record was set in 2007....7 minutes and 38 seconds.now that's fast
