Dude, you were talking to teenage girls about shaving legs. IMO, you got what you deserved. Plus my BS meter says there is more to this story than you're telling.

I answered a question raised by my daughter and wife in fun in a social setting my kids friends then told their mom that my daughter uses the same type a mans razor and so it goes

plus my patronizing meter tells me you pound your chest when you read your own posts

My neighbour on one side is a Finance prof at the University; his wife is a cop, and a total fitness freak.

Between them they have about 8 bikes.

My neighbour on the other side is a professional hockey player, he also rides a bike.

As do lots of his friends that drop by.

A fireman on the other side of him, bike rider.

Geologist up the street, he and his wife have 4 bikes each.

And so it goes in my neighbourhood.

They all think I'm pretty normal.

I do most of the repairs and wheelbuilding, and repairs and etc.

A fitness freak female cop and a pro hockey player? And they both ride? Man you live in heaven. Too bad about the buckethead. :D

I used to live in a northern town where it was winter 9 months of the year and everybody rode. Mtn bikes ruled the day but plenty of roadies too. You never had to make 3 calls to find a riding buddy. I now live in a southern town with a near perfect riding terrain and climate but nobody rides in my neighbourhood. They're all very nice and are interested in the sport when they see me go out but they can't believe that I commute to work by bike. It's all of 28 km one way. I think the attitude here is that bikes are great for taking the kids out for slow saunters and are useful for general fitness but nobody sees their riding as training or a lifestyle.

I ride for a living at present....messenger....have six bikes taking up most of my flat....and live in a block with two black cab drivers (their cabs that is)....if you live in london you will appreciate the irony.

The amount of times i have to button my lip generally in this city when a conversation begins, "the thing about cyclists...."

I agree with the comment about people thinking only kids ride bikes....and i kind of agree....I still get that same enjoyment out of it as I did when I got my first bike....and I think people are missing out who don't ride

The TDF....when the Grand Depart was here in 2007 my mother saw a poster for it and asked if i was going to do it ,"you like racing your bike" was her reasoning.

Tried waxing this spring....do not...i repeat do not try it....other than almost punching my fiancee involuntarily as she tired and started to only have the strength to slowly rip the strips off....my legs have barely recovered from the rash of ingrown hairs

Do I question why I do any of this?....only if it is very very windy

nice crossed up whip happening in that pic boeing!

my hood is sad. there have been dads asking Me to teach Their kids how to ride! simple pure disconnect and laziness.

Well... at least they want there children to learn how to ride a bike...

But... it's kinda funny... here people wouldn't think twice of anyone riding a bike... I've seen girls with tight skirts and high heels riding bikes
(only problem is that they go incredibly sloooooooow and often, especially because they tend to travel in packs, takes up the entire biking lane...)

Is it that fat people hate skinny people?

No. But a fat cyclist who's more obsessed with the weight of his bike and components than he is about his round physique is an idiot.

A fat cyclist who claims to ride mile after mile with no improvement in his physique is one of many weekend cyclists where I ride. When their lips move more than their legs - they're lying.

ha ha...and when their hips move more than their legs...they just snapped their new lightweight saddle rail....I saw it happen....and i swear I had an asthma attack laughing

My neighbors are mostly fat republicans and they try to kill me because they feel put upon if they make an effort not to kill me..No one should care what they think..In fact they shouldn't think..They are not good at it.

Hate to tell you but I bet you might find some cyclist hating fat democrats out there (most of the cyclists I ride with are Republican although not fat).

...Leg shaving? Yes it's silly but trust me it's gross to have your leg hair get all sweaty and having all kinds of dirt and road grime and bugs getting all matted up in your leg hair, way better to shave it off if you ride a lot of miles. Plus if you race it's an acceptance thing, the other riders want to see it as a token that you know what you're doing."

I have been riding for awhile (used to swim a lot too), but I never felt the urge to shave my legs or arms. The only people who have given me grief over it are the guys I cycle with - fortunately, I recently learned on this forum that my decision may be helpful if I ever decide to start racing since all the other guys will be giving me room;)

Not in my neighborhood..fat angry foxwatching w04 stickered crewcab driving republican trash are the biggest threats. The non threats are also Republican..I shouldn't ride on the street because their taxes paid for it and it is only for their use at any given time. Hope you have fun with your republican friends..

This is a great thread - I have thoroughly enjoyed reading all the posts.

I've been cycling for 20 years or so and I shave my legs so I have received the looks, heard the whispers, and am generally considered by some as a freak. I could care less as I think the majority of the population sits on their fat a$$es and watches the boob tube. Come to think of it, I'm glad not everyone cycles because then there would be too much bicycle congestion (that's a completely different topic for conversation - more bikes and less cars ;) ).

Most people I talk to about cycling who originally did not understand my fascination with the sport seem to get it more after we discuss my fascination with the sport. A little history goes a long ways. I could care less, I get it and I know some of you here get it too. I'm ok with that :D

In a nutshell, most of my neighbors think I am nuts!

My foreman at work also rides a bike, and as a result, I cop at a lot of **** from co-workers, that if I'm doing an easier job that we are two peas in a pod, and that I ride with him all the time. The reality is that is that I've ridden with him maybe two or three times.

But none the less, I give plenty of **** back as well.

The nieghbors around me have been good.
But they had a huge issue about the lycra shorts - apparently some bits were "a bit too obvious" for them if we had a chat at the curb after I got back from a ride.
When 1 nieghbour started cycling, they were so proud to let me know they had got "modesty" pants to ride in. Apparently as uncomfortable as all holy heck, but it makes them feel secure.... Or, they are just strange?

You guys should live here in Singapore, it seems everyone here rides a bike. Lots of cycling clubs, club rides, club kit and best of all lots of great bike shops too.

It's not strange on the Wednesday morning rides to see a few hundred lycra clad men/women with their various clubs doing the Kranji ride. A great mix of locals and expats like me.

I'll take a camera with me next time, it'll surprise a lot of you.

I was in Århus a few years ago. I was already infatuated with road racing, but that's where I decided I wanted to live in a place where I could really use a bike for transportation. If I'm remembering correctly, there's a fair-sized hill around the art museum - I was always impressed watching everyone get up it so easily.

IN the Netherlands we have more bikes than people... almost everyone has a bike and cycles ( either small or longer distances ) but there is a large difference between just cycling on a normal city bike and racing ( including BMX en MTB ). But at least most people understand what you do, some like it, some hate it... but i has always been like that

Yeah, the bike is engrained in society in the low countries. It's great!

Couldn't be more different across here. I think the US/UK/Aus are very similar in this respect.

I often pop across the Channel at the weekends to race - particularly in Belgium. It's so depressing coming back to the attitude here.

My neighbours are generally fine, though there is a new lad down the street - he doesn't know who I am - though I know him after he maliciously swerved at me and hurled abuse whilst out training the other night!

Well... I dunno if it looks easy when I go up said hill (and I rode past in on my way to school the last 4 years...) But trust me; as soon as I get to the top and turn I'm like *gaspgaspgasp*

But the real hills are out in the nearby woods...
