+1 what Busted said. If you have a crank just find the BB for it. If you don't have a crank then decide what you want and but the crank and BB at the same time. If you buy a used crank most folks will know what BB it takes. The other issue is the threading. If the bike is less than 30 years old and not italian then the thread is probably 68 mm english. If the frame is italian it may or may not be italian thread, but it probably is.

Or Merckx, not Italian and the far superior iItalian threading.
