They're done - at least for GC chances.

Ryder, Tommy D and CVV all 1:55 down after the first stage.

Unless one of them makes it into a runaway breakaway or they absolutely kill everyone in the TTT, there's no way they can give up almost two minutes in the first stage and hope to podium.

Of course, I'm willing to be proved wrong, and would like to see at least one of their riders make a stunning comeback, but that's not a good way to start the Tour.

Then again, maybe it's Ramunas Navardauskas' turn to have a breakout Tour!

What exactly do Vande Velde and Tommy D. do in this race now. win the TTT? OK then what? poach a stage? The good news is they are healthy but I can't think of a worse case scenario for Tommy D after all these years waiting and working to get the the TDF

turn out the lights and shut the back door.

those 3 guys weren't going to do a good gc anyway. interesting to see if they keep motivated for ttt today. I have somehow my money put on sky and expect a strong lotto

Like one of the posters said what exactly can they do? There going to keep competing towards there GC or they could go all out for team classification pfft. They were realistically only going for a top 10 anyway so they will still be aiming for tha its just quite a bit more difficult

I agree with your assessment of the TTT. I also expect Rabo, RS and Ofcourse HTC to do well

Don't think they had a serious chance of a podium anyway. Losing 1.55 yesterday could prove to be the equivalent of ending the tour 10th instead of 8th, or 12th instead of 10th, something like that.

I wasn't expecting Garmin to have a rider in the top 15 anyway. They're reasonable bets for one of the hillier stages.

Good god, we are one stage into the race. Theres still over 3000 kilometres to go.

Yes, everyone who finished a minute down yesterday is out of it. They might as well pack up and go home right now.

Contador & Sammy will be fine, but it is genuinely damaging for more mediocre Ryders who are relying on hanging on to do well.

They're trying to get a top 10, for god's sake. It's just 2 minutes. They could still do it even without breakaways. God you guys like drama.

I agree another 3 weeks to go and anything can happen and I mean anything it is the Tour.
now if they were 30-40 mins down I would worry.

Ryder still has chance for top ten. That is all they should have expected in the first place. Tom D and CVV had no realistic chance.

So the guy with one 7th place is the only one with a chance, while the guy with a 4th, 8th (with cracked vertabrae in his back), and a crashout in last year's tour has no realistic chance? As long as VdV and Danielson don't injure themselves (which is always a possibility), I'd take their chances as much as Ryder's. They are all on good form, so they've got some work, but I'd hardly discount any of them from a good finish.

Garmin's fork.

I definitely sense friction between Vaughters and Hushovd now. Earlier in the week Hushovd said in an interview that he wasn't even thinking about the green jersey. "Why? Ask Jonathan Vaugthers"

EVen though Hushovd definitely was among the strongest Garmin riders today Vaughters didn't mention his name, nor that Hushovd won the yellow jersey.

It will be interesting to see what will happen tomorrow. Will they work for Thor or will Thor lead out Farrar?

One thing's for sure: Thor is leaving Garmin after this season.

Shows what you know. I guess they were pretty motivated.

You mean like Wigans?

The one "not going to win" GC rider after today who is in trouble for a high place, at this point is Kreuziger. The official Tour results jump around a bit. How did Hesjedal gain 30 seconds on Danielson and VdV today in the TTT?

Stage 1 GC:

94 Thomas Danielson (USA) Team Garmin-Cervelo 0:01:55
95 Juan Manuel Garate (Spa) Rabobank Cycling Team
96 Ryder Hesjedal (Can) Team Garmin-Cervelo
125 Christian Vande Velde (USA) Team Garmin-Cervelo same time

After today's TTT:

61 Ryder Hesjedal (Can) Team Garmin-Cervelo 0:01:14
77 Thomas Danielson (USA) Team Garmin-Cervelo 0:01:49
78 Christian Vande Velde (USA) Team Garmin-Cervelo same time

Official results had all three riders at 1:55 before the stage started this morning.

If Wiggins actually lost time that would have been an excellent, and very amusing, point.

My point was that Wigans is mediocre and barely hangs on...and that will be confirmed as the tour progresses.
