Ha! :D Too funny!! When I was a shop wrench every time I heard some ridiculous story from a customer that someone at another shop told them, I'd simply call the shop and talk to the owner about their employees, or for cleaning up their repair mistakes.

Your fingers must be really strong from all the dialing :D

When I was wrenching, if I had a customer say something like that I'd simply go into the storeroom and get the part they were after (If we had it) or grab the distributors catalogue and show it to them (if we didn't). Calling the shop though - that's just handing back customers IMO.

BTW If a shop tried to tell me 36 Hole rims are no longer made I'd laugh in their face!

I just as soon let them talk nonsense, they eventually find me. Had a gent yesterday with a 1987 Schwinn...126mm rear spacing. All the shops he talked to in Colorado Springs told him he 'there was no way to use modern 9/10/11s components on that frame'..Guess they never heard of 'cold setting' a frame to 130mm. I'm gonna do that next week.

Other shops told a gent he 'couldn't put a triple onto his Columbine'...????

He was 'amazed' when we did....so it goes.

I see your point, but in the end it doesn't really work out that way. Most of the misinformed customers that came to us from other shops usually stayed, we were voted best bike shop in the Twin Cities 7 years in a row for a reason. The offending shops that I called were almost always big brand boutique chain stores where most of the employees are extremely inexperienced.

In Austalia there still seems to be plenty of 9 speed and even 8 speed gear around in some of the country shops. I run DA 9 speed shimano 600 8 speed and have made sure I have enough bits and pices to keep me going, but dont get too stressed about things like chains. I always keep my eye out for my favorite 12-21 cassette at a good price, but have enough old racing cassettes that are only partly worn to keep me going for a fair while I think.

I think if I needed levers I would just go to 10 speed, or maybe just change to a set of downtube shifters if I wanted a bit of retro action.
