I think the state of cycling is so bad because most races are just plain boring. One rider is often so much better then all other riders and they can do nothing about it...no tactic or anything else. It is a problem for the sport. Racing was just much better before 2021.
Bunch of farmers and plumbers in the peloton.

If Healy and Laporte soon catch Van Gils, we have a nice chase group.

No, the first bigger group is simply too big, they won't work together. Only chance if is like 4 guys jump to Van Gils, they work together and Pogacar cracks somehow (which won't happen but ok)

The difference between now and pre-2020 cycling is a question of whether you want a long range attack where you kinda know the race is over with 50+k to go, or the suspense to be left as long as possible before the winning move goes.

I admire Van Gils bravery trying to chase Pogačar but he just has no chance here, it would be better for him to wait for the chase group.

Yeah should really just sit up. He's kind of throwing away a really good result by doing this imo. 1st place is gona anyways.

This is pure nostalgia bias tbh
How so? the period between the last good Froome years and 2021 was better racing with more people closer together. Now we have 6-7 really great riders but if one of them is alone in a race or the parcours is not optimal for the other (e.g. Ronde) you could also just announce the winner before the race.

Yeah this is just extremely dumb, and I don't understand his directors aren't telling him to wait

What did Blythe say?
That the peloton / chasers shouldn't throw in the towel?

If he said that, he is dead wrong. But ofcourse, he's the commentator and has 2 gruelling hours to fill without any suspense.
Why is he wrong they should've give up 💀

The moment pogacar attacked the main group got (understandably) disheartened and kind of stopped. Maybe it is because it's a fairly large group, but realistically it's 80km away and there's 25-30km after this sector of fairly flat asphaly roads.

The gap is now 1:40, when it could've been 1:00 or so.
