I would say that it depends if you want the "Family Weekend in Paris" to become a "Cavman Sr's Tour de France Weekend in Paris".

If, and it sounds a bit like it, the rest of your family isn't as enthuso as you about the sport, you'll burn up a lot of harmony points trying to grab some peloton. :)

I was in beautiful and historic Blois on the day of Liège-Bastogne-Liège this year. I was grumpy and clock-watching and, manna from heaven, it started raining. I said to my other half, ooh this doesn't look like stopping (it really didn't), I think it's best that we find some shelter. And we did. In the first place I saw with the race on the telly. :)

I think you're coming from the same place I am. And to be totally honest, I'm not totally sold on the idea of hanging about from stupid o'clock either. It's a great city, and we've only got a day there.

StyrbjornSterki's Place de la Concorde plan might work for us best. Are ther many screens etc? And what about cafes/bars?

Cheers to Dim for your advice.
Pitched our plot at about 8am roughly 100m from the Arc de Triomphe end, just down from the team sky fans.
Right on the barrier, fantastic possie, although each side were french who were a bit stand-off-ish. Still had a great day though

Glad you had a good day. I was actually doing telephone commentary to the sky/brit lot of the last two kilometres. You might have noticed the ruddy great cheer that went up when my co-commentator at that end relayed the result. Nearly blew my ear to peices over the phone.

neils just got back and done his writeup of the day

I don't know about anybody else, but I've see the finish in Paris and I wasn't there at 8, our bus arrived in Paris from Troyes around 11:30am and I was able to walk around and find a spot to watch.

i guess it depends if you are happy with any spot, or you want a particular spot.

I found a particular spot that suited me. I had a lovely snooze in the sunshine on the lawns by the tunnel. Then when the racing actually started we got a decent view down by Norwegian corner which was pretty good fun.

We then screwed up by trying to get to the Place De la Concorde through the Tuileries, but hey ho, live and learn.

Still a good thing to do for all of us.

Norwegian corner is great fun, but you do miss out on the lap of honour, and yes, its impossible to get up to champs elysees or concorde after the race as they make everyone take the exit routes. You cant even get there half the time with a pass depending on the mood of the policeman in question.
Only way round is under the tunnel and up the other side.
