Sounds like he's cracking up a bit under lets face it, an extremely tepid level of scrutiny. The coverage of him has been almost entirely positive so far, Armstrong was having Walsh and Kimmage going through his bins and yelling in his face at every press conference by this point.

Tbh, its unnecessary to say this against ur admirers like thomas and definitely when u're racing against a 2nd tier gc riders. It will only add fire to an already frustrated peleton with his riding.

Agree. Most of the GC-riders in this race won't do nothing this entire race but sit in the wheels, so what the *** do these twats expect?!

I get why wildcard teams may have to beg for opportunities, but it’s deeply undignified to ask a competitor not to try.

Good gifts are not begged for, but come from generosity. Like to a former teammate who will be more than happy to return the favour.

If it was his DS giving a generalised directive then it's probably the wiser thing to do, be diplomatic, long season ahead, conserve energy etc. If specific riders have asked them not to chase then that's hilarious and they should've just ignored them and chased anyway.

The next 3 stages are very important. The only way he can lose this giro is by having a bad crash so next 3 stages are decisive. Hope he stays on the bike!! Fingers crossed young man!

It's the sort of throwaway comment people will just make in the peloton. How often have we not heard of riders asking to slow down in a way that it's more of a statement of them going hard rather than an actual request to slow down. And it's not like upfront communications about intentions never happens. Like Van Aert trying to convince Pog he wanted to go in the break for the stage win on Luz Ardiden in '21.

And besides, if they were really begging that hard, it'd be a bit weak of Pogacar to give in wouldn't it?

Somewhat. I think they had the strength to pull in the break, but they very quickly gave them a lot of time and then just waited for others to take over. So maybe the team was on a bad day, maybe they decided to save energy once they knew who was in the group, or maybe they decided to gift it.
