So they don't reward the accomplishments of the year before?

They do, but they also just seem to have very Pop-culture surface level, favorite sports of luxury and rich people criteria it seems. They basically just give it to whoever a sports casual would think is the best athlete. That‘s why Bolt won a frankly ridiculous four because he was just very famous. Federer won four in a row, Djokovic 5, I agree the award is BS.
Pidcock got action sportsperson of the year, though, so he‘s one up on Pogačar. Tadej better get on that Mountainbike for the next Olympics

Compared to cycling tennis (and many other disciplines) have a reputation of clean sport. It's about reputation, not about actual things going on. Cycling has been totally compromised regarding doping: too much fight against doping proved costly to the sport.

Pogi doesn't need it but if there is such an award and he is nominated, two years in a row, then he deserves it. No other nominee achieved more in this two years in terms of sport.

Sinner was deleted from the candidates list last year but was present on the list this year: comical stuff considering the award was given for 2025 achievements (doping ban included). Good that Alcaraz won it instead.

narvaez was supposed to do the tour and now he's listed for the giro, so vermersch will probably replace him. Narvaez was a better option for hilly stages and medium mountain stages, vermersch is better for the team TT and flat stages

I could see Vermeersch adding more value than Sivakov though in a slightly different role. Would be a useful engine for the TTT.

Narvaez never was expected to do the Tour.
They released the team very early in the season and they decided to swap Narvaez with McNulty.

Sivakov is more reliable than Florian in the high mountains so he would be a better domestique.

Think it is more to do with his contract renewal and people leaving. Sivakov was on the list then removed.

I think the TdF is locked. Narvaez will probably race TdR before the Giro. He also doesn't need to perform as a GC rider so he can use some days to recover after a deep effort.

Alcaraz had a very good season but its nothing spectacular when compared to all time great tennis seasons.

Pogacar's TdF, WC, EC and 3 monuments tops Alcaraz easily and that doesn't account for his other 2025 wins.

Tennis is much more relevant than cycling.
