There is already a big(three or four pages worth) thread elsewhere about Phinney. As I said in that one too, I think no hope for GC, too heavy(180lbs) and too tall (6 foot 3). Granted some of that weight will come down after he is done messing around with the track scene. He will, however, be a contender in the cobblestoned classics see as he has won U23 Paris-Roubaix. Of course Americans don't want that, we just want TDF riders.

And yes, Tejay Van Garderen looks solid with his 3rd place at Dauphine. He is set to ride the Vuelta which is looking set some stories with teams seeing what they have for next year as well as looking to be competitive.

I always hear: "The kid is way to young to do a GT".

That's actually quite strange considering some other youngsters

Alberto Contador
Andy Schleck
Laurent Fignon
Jan Ulrich

History seems to indicate that the really great can be thrown in at a really early age and that they can be competitive from the start. Whereas classics riders tend to be a tad older. I think Andy is the youngest classic winner I saw in ages... and he is quite seasoned even though he is young.

Actually Menchov may be a good example of a current GC rider who is a bit bigger/heavier?

oops check that :) Rabo site lists him as 1.80 m and 65kg. That is light for his height.

Maybe the talk of heavier GC riders should move to the clinic

Phinney will just a TT/Sprinter :D

Where are you getting the "Lance was 170 pounds when he was dominating the TdF"? I am not buying that. I think he was closer to the low 160s.

And indeed most GT contenders already had a top 10 or top 15 under their name before they where 25.
There are few exceptions, but most of the time "what is good, rises fast" in terms of GC riders

Curious, I remember Federico Martin Bahamontes claiming exactly the same about Miguel Indurain :)

I don't say you are incorrect in remembering, but Miguel was seen as a future GT contender from day 1. I never saw anyone being touted as a TdF winner and then delivering 4-5 years later like he did.

I was sceptical till 1991, but I was pretty much the only one (deservedly so) :)

Stop with that talk.
Really, does every thread need to go down the road to Armstrong and doping?

Tom Boonen won the E3 prijs Vlaanderen, Ronde van Vlaanderen and Paris-Roubaix at the age of 24. He already won Gent-Wevelgem at the age of 23 and was third in Paris-Roubaix at the age of 21.

I have to agree with others and say that Taylor just isn't a future GT star. I think any attempts to turn him into one will only hurt him. Personally, I would love to see him wim Flanders and PR and all the other northern classics.

We could still turn this into a Gesink or Evans discussion? :D

Yes, and then start slagging team Sky for underachieving yet again...;). Gesink looked good yesterday BTW.

Taylor looks like a classics rider and he should also look for TT stages at the Tours. He's a big guy for a 20 year old and whether he grows any taller and heavier who knows, but I dont see him as a GC man in grand tours.

TT stages? Phinney's TT skill is not as excellent as everyone thinks. maybe we will see it in U23 Worlds TT.
