Yeah TBH I actually prefer the look of the Giro helmet to conventional ones. I am a sometime commuter. Objective benefits though, nah.

If that was true- they wouldn't be wearing them.

Just playing the devils advocate here:

If what u claim was true, all would wear them ;)

Personally I would use everything aero possible for riding a Grand Tour. That's a lot of kcals over three weeks, even a few percentage points from equipment knocking down energy expenditures will make a difference.

I am sure Fabian would be more aerodynamic if he shaved more, and Wiggins would be more aorodynamic if he lost the sideburns. And before helmets where forced why didnt all ride bald? I mean come on, that is the lvl of gain we are talking about here.

I understand the yellow helmet for the leading team is mandatory.

No its not mandatory. The leading team is allowed/encouraged to wear yellow helmets, but they are not required/forced to do so.

Anyone remember these:

Plenty of sportspeople were happy to wear and endorse these daft things in spite of them doing precisely nothing.

I'll bet we see a bunch of muppets wearing these Pudding Bowls in the Sunday bunch ride two weeks from now

I think they look quite cool, but only with the visor. Paired with sunglasses, I'm not a fan. Sceptical about the ventilation though, looks like it would be horrible.

And not in the peloton, but alone against the wind I guess. So the vast majority of time the advantage will not be the same.

not sure why people make this argument - drag is not eliminated in the peloton, but is about 70% of riding solo. Giro claims a 17 second savings over 40km for their new helmet.

my motorcycle helmet uses some of the same principles to cool my head and my schuberth helmet does it better than the HJC or Nolan I had before. The vents are tiny but effective. these bike helmets are vented much heavier but the vents are largely the space between the shell and the cradle and I can say it works with little tiny 1/4 inch holes and channels. The bike helmet is wide open in comparison. Of course the heat load from cycling is greater than on a motorcycle helmet but ventilation is not dependant on bigger holes. In this case the helmet probably won't work at slow speeds so it would not work for MTB. I frankly believe the claims that they are much cooler than they look.
Nando's rule: it isn't how you feel it is how you look.

Regardless of effectivity, I'm amazed that the helmet manufacturers are doing this. You'd think something that fugly wouldn't sell even if every single pro rider endorsed it.

Agreed.

It reminded me of the "little addidas mishap" recently.

Rlly?

Maybe, if going 40 km/h alone for an hour. How often we see that?
