I think where more than 20% of the peloton finishes outside of the time limit or otherwise at the race directors discretion.

EDIT: You know the stage is boring when folks are arguing about Cav on a mountain stage.

yeah if gruppetto is 20% of riders who started stage I think its pretty much a given they will be allowed to stay in

They'll change the time limit, or get a big enough grupetto with him, or so on. They don't want to throw a jersey-wearer out of the race unless they have to, and even then they'll try not to.

would Cavendish be docked points if he was in the gruppetto that finished outside the original permitted time ?

or would he only lose points if he was a straggler (outside the gruppetto) ?

they only put the pressure on when velits was delayed on tourmalet to eliminate another contender, thats why I hate this tour, he would have put 4 minutes in ITT in schlecks and they with only 5km racing would never teke it back of him,now its all over for velits chances

I doubt Leopard was even aware Velits was at the back when they pushed the pace. The idea that the Schlecks see Velits as a contender is ludicrous at best. He couldn't finish ahead of Mosquera in the Vuelta, he wouldn't finish top 5 even if he was in the same time as Fränk Schleck right now. He's a talented guy but nowhere near the level of the Schlecks, Contador, Basso, Evans and Samuel Sanchez.

Funny enough Le Tour is using the phrase "gruppetto" in its live tracking.

Gruppetto would all be docked.

First time it happened was the Sierra de la Pandera stage of the '09 Vuelta. Greipel lost the points jersey to Valverde because of that, and thought it was some ridiculous decision to give the title to a Spaniard before being informed that it was a new and universal rule, it's just that he was the first to lose out because of it (he then went on to win the next flat stage and get the jersey back of course).

It also happened to Tyler Farrar on the L'Aquila stage of the Giro last year. He had been ahead of Evans but with Evans having more stages coming that favoured him. It could have been an interesting competition but it was destroyed by that -25 points (all stages have the same points in the Giro/Vuelta).

I'd suggest Riblon is the best climber up front, but bridging to that group must have been hard...

Riblon does what Mollema should have done. TGBM is too nice for this world :(

So with an out of shape TGBM, Gesink, drop outs boom and Garate, a seriously mediocre LLS and the three musqueteers Barredo, LTD and Tjalingi (not made for the mountains)... RAB has 0 chance to do anything this tour anymore.

Gerdemann falling back, wonder what he's going to do, I guess he'll try to be caught at or near the top of the Port de Lers

You're suggesting the race organisers will create a large grupetto in order to keep Cavendish in? I'm not sure they have quite that much control.

In the race, it's nice to see Leopark Trek trying the same tactic again. Still, no-one else was going to do anything in the bunch yet.

Gerdemann should be ashamed that he is getting outclimbed by Voigt. Who was the great hope of German cycling again?

More looks like he just isn't good enough to follow.
