This weeks Cycling Weekly (UK) hints at a pro tour team being so hacked off at their sponsors rubbish bikes they simply bought a load from another brand and repainted them! Who was it?

I bet on Saxo Bank and Specialized. I'd say what with chains dropping and that monster Spartacus beasting it over cobbles they may be inadequate.

Could be wrong. Someone who can recognize subtitles in the geometry could tell.

Andy had a custom-painted one since he had a commercial deal with Specialized ... Cancellara had the painted-over one and Andy the crappy original?

Here's young Schleck's custom. I took this pic at the Sint Niklaas post-Tour crit.

If they needed to respray, then you're talking about problems with frames rather than whole bikes.

That's it! It was 7-11's Huffy frames, which were actually re-branded Serottas.

Thanks for contributing that "hint"! XD

Actually, Schleck & Cancellara both had custom paint jobs. A lot of guys do. Speciaized had an "In It To Win It" contest for the Tour de France where people could enter to have their names on either Alberto's or Andy's bike that they would ride one stage of the Tour. This photo has a white frame with 250 names in black. Schlecklet rode it into the jersey, and brought it back for another stage as well.

My name was on the right rear fork of Contador's (Specialized e-mailed us close-up photos before the Tour). It was up to the riders which stage they would use the bikes. He waited until a nothing sprint stage to ride his, and changed bikes halfway through the stage due to some "mechanical". I think he just wanted his regular bike, but after waiting for weeks, and encouraging him on his website to ride it on a mountain finish, it was a huge let-down. The riders said at the time that both bikes would be auctioned off for charity after the race.

I don't know if the CW "hint" has any basis in fact, but I really doubt it's Specialized. A lot of people who should know said that Schlecklets chain jumped because he made a shifting error on a steep climb. Specialized works hard to design the best bikes they can, and used a lot of feedback from the Saxo riders to do so.

I'm with you! My name was on Contador's down tube. the pics were posted on flickr. And I agree on your thoughts on Specialized, especially since 3 teams seem to be happy to be riding on those bikes for next season: Saxo Bank, Astana, and HTC. That doesn't seem to "hint" at them being a bunch of shoddy bikes.

Andys ToC bike

I examined this at a Crit this past summer and it was clearly repainted, maybe just the vintage red/white scheme. it was a quick and dirty paint job tho.

Contador had one as well. Both him and Schleck changed bikes(the special painted ones with all the names on it) during the race because something was wrong with it.

Your comments are NOT correct. Only Contador swapped bikes after a short stint on the specially painted model. And as theswordsman described above, A.Schleck rode his in a couple of stages, not just one. And, he did NOT swap it out mid stage, either.
It's pretty amazing that something different happens, and suddenly lots of people are ignorantly commenting incorrectly on the occurrence, with a multitude of interpretations. And this all started over some nonsensical thread idea. What's the BIG DEAL about custom paint jobs anyway????? What game is changing? What are we all talking about on this thread, anyway???!!!

It's not that long ago that pros had custom bikes built for them by the builder of their choice, then painted to look like a team bike.

Now they have a "custom" paint job on the same stock frame out of a mold and that bike is referred to as a "custom".

Weird the way the game is changing.

Most pros ride whatever they are given and naturally they will telll you it is the best bike they have ever ridden. An aquaintence had Rolf Aldags spare tmobile alluminum pinarello, he told me it was an extremely harsh riding bike.

I bet. That thing would be made for stiffness and lightness, right? Those qualities don't lend themselves to comfort. I've heard the same about the BH frames ridden by Liberty Seguros in 2006.

How did your friend come across the Aldag frame? Any pics?

I forget which Italian team it was, but whichever team was using Cipollini's bikes swapped out in the last half of the season for re-branded bikes. this story was well circulated in Italian cycling circles, so this is probably what Cycling Weekly is re-reporting.

It's a pretty common occurrence however and sincerely I do not consider it a big deal. If you don't feel confident risking your life with the tool you are given then something has to be done no?

IF you want to REALLY start a polemic, let's get reporters nosing around at team uniforms to see how many of them are actually 100% manufactured by the official clothing suppliers - that percentage will be VERY low.

With nothing better to do on a rainy afternoon I will speculate. I think it was a team that either used to ride Specialized, or a team that is going to Specialized next year. Probably the former.

Check it out.
You know what I said is right on the money. Your Snarky remark deserves a reality check, It wasn't between you and I, so you should just mind your business, or maybe you need the valium, sweetheart. This thread is just one big masturbation anyway because no one really knows the answer to the threads question. In fact, with that in mind, maybe you could use some vaseline. Ciao

I think treks are awesome because lance rides them and he would ride anything flimsy and cheap would he?
