Froome could have worked Wiggo over but didn't. He rode away from him on one stage which looked accidental. Anyway unless something dramatic happens or someone has a puncture at a bad time etc......it's looking more and more like the TT decides it as the top four are pretty close on the climbs and no one seems much stronger. It's only the fatiguie factor now for Dumoulin and Froome and whether Thomas can finish off the three weeks in good shape. Roglic has surprised me. Quintana not so much.

Sky is angry with Sporza for calling out Sir Dave's lies on having offered a contract to Evenepoel. They told Sporza to be 'careful' with what they say. And then they wonder why people dislike them - the empire and their stormtroopers.
So did they or did they not offer him a contract? And I don't get Sky on this either. I mean, sure, they're not going to talk about contract negotiations to the press, but do the rumour really matter either way?

They did offer him a contract, but Brailsford denied it - though in a 'smart' way, saying 'I did't offer him a contract' etc. FFS. Reminds me of the Aes Sedai in the Wheel of Time series. They don't literally lie, but the goal is exactly the same. And yes, why on earth would you want to deny this? The way Brailsford behaves here tells me a lot about how he sees things in other areas (i.e. taking advantage of everything that is not strictly illegal).

I think that idea of someone saying no to a Sky deal, they don't want that to be a possibility.

According to Sporza they offered him a contract for 5 years, €150k signing bonus, and a salary of €250k/year. He said no because he likes the Wolfpack and Patrick Lefevere (according to Patrick Lefevere ;-))

Why in the world would Evenepoul agree to an offer like that, or really almost any 5-year offer?

If he's as good as people say he is, he could be charging 10 times that in a couple years.

Just read sir davie big baws head honcho’ s comments....it’s true what he saying

What are you talking about?
Go and read sir Dave’s comments...it’s all true

"It's interesting. We raced in Italy and Chris's case was open when we were at the Tour of Italy and the Italians were fantastic, to be fair to them. The Spanish, fantastic. It just seems to be a French thing,” Brailsford said.

“It's like a French cultural thing really, isn't it?

He says it seems like and its like - enough ambiguity - but causes the headline,

The question is it a French thing or rather a Tour de France thing, which attracts people from all over the world, I guess he leaves himself wiggle room

Not justifying any physical actions against riders (including spitting etc...) but the decision to clear Froome came shortly after ASO had banned him from racing. That surely spiked the animosity toward Sky and Froome just in time for the Tour. He was still innocent until proven guilty of what he was being charged with during the Giro and no one knew anything about the charge during the Vuelta. Comparing the fan treatment of Sky/Froome during the other 2 grand tours isn't applicable.

Sky has only guaranteed to sponsor the team till 2020. And with Disney takeover the future of the team is not certain.

5 year deal makes absolutely zero sense.
Discovery folded the year Contador won his firt TDF. The only way for Sky to ensure sponsorship after Disney takeover is to manufacture an American serial GT winner and have it ready for next year.

I heard Chri Horner is still up for winning another tour or two.

No, Sky has an indefinite term sponsorship deal that forces them to communicate 2 years in advance if they want to stop financing the team.

tell me more!
I thought that kind of deal was made for Sunweb
I didnt know Team Sky has such a deal with the owners

Re: Team Sky Discussion thread

DL and Brailsford really hate each other. Brailsford knows DL effectively leaked the salbutamol case and DL dislikes Brailsford as he's never going to be a quiet critic. It's a brilliant rivalry from 2 people urgently out of their depth in their jobs.

DL is proving to be remarkably stupid, his quotes today defending the fans who assault team sky, is a whole new level of incompetency. Brian Cookson was infinite my better than this ASO pupet.

LOL all the way around town! I must have missed the defending of fans comment today.

I don't think Sirdooshbag is proving any smarter. He's totally fanning the flames, which is just plain stupid. I am fairly amazed this guy has kept his job, given all the mud Sky has been dragged through.

Cookson didn't do much of anything. He was very vanilla, which was better at not creating inflammatory situations. But otherwise he was a bit of a useless sod.

Whatever you think of Brailsford his job is to win the tour de france, he does this with monotonous regularity. How can he be out of his depth?

In terms of performance with the team he's quite flawless, but in terms of reputation and PR-wise it's been a disaster lately. His lamentation about the booing and punching was understandable to a certain point, but the aggressive manner in which he hit back (at the French people) was completely unnecessary and counterproductive.

Brailsford is brilliant at his job. He may be an absolute sh**, but he is getting results and his diatribe on Monday was a clever way to deflect attention from the Moscon fiasco. He knew exactly what he was doing. Put it this way: If your goal was to win the Tour de France, wouldn't you want him on your side? I would. It is not a race that is generally won by nice guys, let's put it that way.

Edit: But guys like Brailsford generally get their comeuppance. His day may very well be coming.

Lappartient...I have no idea if he's any good -- how would you measure it? I would think that being UCI president is a thankless job given the presence of ASO. It's not good when the owner of the biggest races has more power than the organizing group.

Did he leak the Salbutamol case? I don't see why he would. I think it came from deep within Sky itself, to be honest. You'd have to look at means, motive and opportunity.

Plenty haven't such as Alex Ferguson

Assuming G wins this what is the plan next year, G to the Giro, Froome to the tour (all in, not trying to save something for the vuelta double again, been there, done that) and Bernal for the Vuelta?

Not saying they would, but has anybody ever come close to winning all 3 grand tours with 3 different racers?
