Yes! One of my favourite races, the real start of the season for me, and a gaping hole in Alejandro's palmares.

Agreed, Paris-Nice, along with Lombardia and the Worlds are the big holes in Alejandro's palmares. Time to go get those. Although tying Merckx at Liege would be nice as well. :D

If C. Froome and T. Dumoulin are confirmed in Giro, Movistar has the space to also weaken their team for the Tour.

Yes, they should also give Landa a strong Giro team with many climbing domestiques, make every stage as hard as possible and go for it on the big stages, even if you don't win the Giro, you'll always make it harder for Froome to do the double.

As Friebe wrote, this is probably a route best suited for a Di Luca 2007-type. Not too much time trialing and just need to survive those 3-4 very tough mountain stages. Valverde very much rhymes on such a type of rider and no doubt this is a very good route for him, but I still prefer the same old same old schedule: Andalucia, Murcia, P-N, Catalunya/Pais Vasco, Ardennes, Dauphine, Tour, Sebastian, Vuelta, Worlds, Lombardia.

Movistar has two mayor forces against for GT titles in 2018 : Landani is going to face Froome at Il Giro with a A- team, while Quintana will head to Le Tour against a bit tired Froome with his A+ team seeking the 5th, & also, most likely a very motivated & improved "DUMOULIN" with a much better team backing him....

So I guess is up to Valverde to win La Vuelta

Actually this makes sense. However, to help this hold Valverde out of the Giro and the Tour. The year he won the Vuelta he didn't race either of the other two GTs and was much fresher at that point. That should be the best plan to win a Grand Tour. Plus it will give Valverde one of those pieces of history he's chasing by getting his 7th Vuelta podium tying the record.

According to AS Landa (and Unzue) plan was to ride Tour and Vuelta but with Froome riding in Italy could be forced to changed his plan and ride the Giro instead of Valverde.

If i were Unzue i would sent the three musketeers to the Tour and Vuelta. Once of a lifetime opportunity for both Landa and Quintana to win the Tour. The Vuelta is their home GT, where they have some unfinished business left after the echec this year. Also far more interesting for their main sponsor in comparison to the Giro. Youngsters like Carapaz,Fernandez,Roson and a Soler can build GT-experience in the Giro.

Well- that's a bit odd

So in Unzue's thinking- Movistar's master plan was to throw everything at Le Tour with Quintana & Landa, but now that Froome is going to Italy, it all changes the initial plot because of that?

The expectation was the Giro could have a softer field than the TDF, hence why Valverde ( listed on PC ) would ride ( with a weakish team ) and most probably get a podium and if lucky a win - Now that Froome is riding the Giro it makes sense to switch Landa who will probably do better with a weakened team - Moviestar need to be wise how they deploy their resources as they lack depth for GC's.

Truthfully this is what I would do as well. I'd send Amador as leader to the Giro with a group of kids to learn. Send the 3 GC riders to the Tour and Vuelta.

Probably he want to fatigue Froome at the Giro to have more chance in the Tour, and Landa is the better for this job because he's the more attacking prone of his leaders but he needs also a strong team to succeed.

This is what Unzue said to Marca yesterday after the presentation of the route.

Is Unzue planning to do what Astana did to Contador in 2015?
He should try that, Sky will be much stronger than Tinkoff, but you can make it as hard as possible for Froome.

Landa in the Giro is something that would be great.
I don't think so. no one in the current peloton can destroy the sky train (with froome in the first gt) so I want him to go to the tour, just to have a fight between him and quintana :D

The most intriguing thing about the next season is how they split the races between them. After looking at the Giro-route again, I actually hope Valverde will ride.

I think the giro route doesn't favor valverde at all. too many uphill finishes on long climbs.

Tbh...

Giro looks better on paper for both Quintana, Valverde and Landa than what the Tour does.

I understand Quintana wanting to win the Tour, because that is what missing, but that route doesnt suit him at all imo.
