Agreed. It's so difficult to correctly predict your performance in a one-day I wonder why people even bother, especially here since it's a race I doubt anyone really cares about outside France. I remember reading something that his major objective is to win Amstel Gold this year, for which he'll probably have to beat someone better than Hivert.
That said Vacansoleil is going to Paris-Nice in March, and that seems like the type of parcours where he might be able do something if he has his Vuelta form from last year. Seems like a much better bet to say you'll take a stage there. Much higher profile, and you'll have 7 shots to do it.

Petacchi wins stage 2 of the Giro della Provincia di Reggio Calabria. A good signing by Lampre, he may be 35/36, but he is still goood for quite a few wins this season.

It's not like we're making a big deal out of it, it's just funny. Hoogerland is/was stupid to say things like that in the first place; those kinds of statements never gain you anything and you look silly when you don't win. Also I'm 80-90% convinced he is doping (he's done it in the past), and its always nice to see dopers lose (know I shouldn't be saying this here, but still).

So when Contador says he wants to win the Tour you're gonna laugh at him when he doesn't? When Cancellara says he is trying to win the prologue in the Tour you will be jumping for joy when he doesn't?
This way an attitude of medocrity is created. Noone dares to say anything anymore, noone stands out. A sport full of cyclists with strong legs but a closed mouth. All the extra spectacle will be gone. There are too many cyclists like that already.
And after all it was not that strange that he said that. I mean, he trained much, he's feeling good and confident and coming home second isn't exactly far away from winning right?
I agree with you that it would be funny if he decided to stop racing after 55 kilometers, but he was actually quite accurate with his prediction. At least I was not rolling on the floor crying of joy...

Dunno if DIM knows more than I do (quite likely as like many posters he seems more knowledgeable about the sport than I am) but De Gendt pushed EBH into 2nd place last year as the hero of the ToB. As an unknown 22 year old, he went out on breaks every day until he had accumulated enough points to win both the KOM an Points jerseys.
It's hard not to get excited by an aggressive young rider like that.
