*laughs hard at Hoogerland*

It's such fun to see jackasses with egg on their face :)

Agreed. It's so difficult to correctly predict your performance in a one-day I wonder why people even bother, especially here since it's a race I doubt anyone really cares about outside France. I remember reading something that his major objective is to win Amstel Gold this year, for which he'll probably have to beat someone better than Hivert.

That said Vacansoleil is going to Paris-Nice in March, and that seems like the type of parcours where he might be able do something if he has his Vuelta form from last year. Seems like a much better bet to say you'll take a stage there. Much higher profile, and you'll have 7 shots to do it.

sigh

He's probably devastated. He wanted to be good here and came in second.
No sleep tonight for Johnny.

Petacchi wins stage 2 of the Giro della Provincia di Reggio Calabria. A good signing by Lampre, he may be 35/36, but he is still goood for quite a few wins this season.

I've seen the interview, the reporter asked what his next race was. Hoogerland said "Marseillaise". Then the reporter asked who was gonna win there. With a smile on his face Hoogerland declared he was gonna win. In other words, just the normal reaction for a question like that.

Concerning the oneday classics he said that he wanted to ride for the win, not that he would win. He argued that based on his form of last year and the added experience he should do well there and compete with the best (no shocking statement, after all he came in fourth in Lombardia).

Conclusion: You're all making a massive point of out totally nothing.

Maybe Hoogerland should say he will be 139th in his next race, then you'll like him ;)

It's not like we're making a big deal out of it, it's just funny. Hoogerland is/was stupid to say things like that in the first place; those kinds of statements never gain you anything and you look silly when you don't win. Also I'm 80-90% convinced he is doping (he's done it in the past), and its always nice to see dopers lose (know I shouldn't be saying this here, but still).

He didn't in the past. At least, they didn't find anyting. I know there are stories about him but those were about his natural values (until proven otherwise).

So when Contador says he wants to win the Tour you're gonna laugh at him when he doesn't? When Cancellara says he is trying to win the prologue in the Tour you will be jumping for joy when he doesn't?

This way an attitude of medocrity is created. Noone dares to say anything anymore, noone stands out. A sport full of cyclists with strong legs but a closed mouth. All the extra spectacle will be gone. There are too many cyclists like that already.

And after all it was not that strange that he said that. I mean, he trained much, he's feeling good and confident and coming home second isn't exactly far away from winning right?
I agree with you that it would be funny if he decided to stop racing after 55 kilometers, but he was actually quite accurate with his prediction. At least I was not rolling on the floor crying of joy...

He got off on a technicality on the Testosterone/Epitestosterone ratio test when he was 18 and tested positive.

Anyone familiar with the guy (I don't mean fans) knows what he's on. Same goes for his little friend who also had a breakout season last year. That's all I'm saying on him.

He was above the 1 to 6 ratio, was sent to Köln and further tests were performed. Nothing wrong (unnatural) was found. The ratio test is only a first test which does not give any evidence. That's the correct story.

This is my understanding. I will admit I knew nothing of him before last years Vuelta but his performance there and at several races afterwards have made me a minor fan. If there is anything to connect him to dopping beyond being a long way to the right of the bell curve when it comes to testosterone production (maybe he could make more money as a porn star? :p ) I would like to hear it so I can reassess my appraisal of him.

I know this is a more appropriate topic for the clinic so a link to a thread there would probably be better than a detailed explanation here.

Dim, what is the story with Thomas de Ghent? I get the impression you are a fan or something like that?

Dunno if DIM knows more than I do (quite likely as like many posters he seems more knowledgeable about the sport than I am) but De Gendt pushed EBH into 2nd place last year as the hero of the ToB. As an unknown 22 year old, he went out on breaks every day until he had accumulated enough points to win both the KOM an Points jerseys.

It's hard not to get excited by an aggressive young rider like that.
