The 2012 CQ Ranking Manager Game

Welcome to the 2012 CQ Ranking Manager Game!

Do you think you know a lot about up and coming youngsters? Do you have a good grasp of which riders have been underperforming? Are you eager to show that you know which riders will have a break through season?

Then this game is something for you.

Last year we had a great battle between ingsve and Waterloo Sunrise for the win. In the end, ingsve ran away with the title and, amazingly, fulfilled his promise that he would win the game.

Last year was also a sort of a pilot version of the game. Regrettably I published a lot of teams and then allowed others to join the game, which may he influenced some teams. The reason was that I wasn't aware that you could create a smart spreadsheet which easily could be updated, and once I discovered that, I allowed anyone to join instead of the proclaimed 25 entrants only.

This year anyone who wish to join is more than welcome, and I promise that no teams will be revealed before after the final deadline.

The 25-33 riders and 7500 points maximum were also some pretty random limits, but it turned out that it actually worked pretty well. At least as seems as though most people were quite happy with these limitations which was also expressed in the evaluation thread.

A few minor adjustments have been made though as rulings on doped riders have been changed which you can read more about in the rules.

I hope you'll like the game, but if you're a cycling fan, I'm sure you will. This is your opportunity to show off your cycling knowledge and claim bragging rights. Even with the minor bumps in the road last year I think the game was a succes and I'm sure most had a lot of fun picking their teams and following their chosen riders carefully throughout the season.

Hopefully this season will be even better, and I hope to see even more entrants than last years 87. Have fun analyzing, researching and finally picking your team!

Below are the official rulings. If you have any questions regarding the game itself or any ruling, please write them in this thread so that everyone else can see the answer aswell. If you have any questions regarding any specific rider and his value, please do not post your question in this thread, but send me a PM instead. This way we make sure that as little information about anyone's team and riders in general are revealead.

1. How the game works:

1.1. The aim of the game:

When the season has finished, your team will have obtained a new value based on how many CQ points your riders score throughout the season.

The aim of the game is to be the one whose team have the highest aggregated score at the end of the season, regardless of how many points were used on the team.

1.2. Duration:

The season starts when the first race is held and ends when the last major race (.1 or higher) is held. The winner will be crowned when the next update after the last major race is out.

1.3. Updates:

CQRanking.com usually uploads an update every week. Based on this update I load the points into a spreadsheet and upload it for everyone to see.

2. On picking your team:

2.1. Team size:

Your team must consists of anywhere from 25-33 riders.

2.2. Rider value:

A riders value is set based on his last active season. For the majority of the riders this value is the amount of points they scored in the 2011 season. However, some exceptions from this rule are made. For more on this, read "4. On doping".

A rider who for any other reason than suspension due to doping didn't score any points - either because he didn't score any points in the races he rode or because he didn't ride any races - is valued at zero points.

2.3. Team value:

The aggregated value of your teams riders must not exceed 7500 points.

3. Submitting your team:

3.1. How to?

If you wish to join the game just send me a PM with your team outlined like this:

LAST NAMES First names
LAST NAMES First names

And nothing else. Please don't add anything else like value of the rider after the name etc.

Please note that the name must be excatly like it is written on CQRanking.com otherwise the value won't show, so the easiest thing to do is to just copy the name from the homepage.

3.2. Deadline:

You can send me your team now if you wish. However, note that is still racing to be done this season so the riders final value isn't up yet.

The final update on CQRanking.com is usually done on December 31 so at that point the values should be final.

The deadline for sending in your team will be announced later on - it will be between December 31 and the first race of the season. I will update here once I know when that is.

You can also change your team up untill this point. Just send me a PM with your new team.

4. On doping:

4.1. Previous doped riders:

You are free to pick riders who have been convicted for using doping as long as their suspension is over. This means that you are not allowed to pick riders who's suspension will be lifted after the first race of the 2012 season has been raced. For instance, David Garcia Dapena is suspended untill October 6 2012 and is thus not eligible to be picked.
This also affects riders provisionally suspended.

A rider returning from a suspension will have a value equivalent to that of his last full season before his suspension. Hence if a rider was banned for two years on July 5th 2009 his last full season would be the 2008 season, and his value would therefore be that of 2008.

4.1.1. Special cases:

Doping is a controversial issue and so is it in this game. There will always be some grey areas so I have to decide what the best thing to do is in special cases. This is why I've decided to create this point and publish values of riders who fall into this category. If you spot someone who might fall into this, please send me a PM.

Ezequiel Mosquera Miquez: is only suspended by his team and is thus eligable to ride. Even though his case was dropped at WADA, doping has still influenced his 2010 and 2011 season and his value is therefore that of his 2009 score.

Oscar Sevilla Ribera: even though his case was dropped at WADA, doping has still influenced his 2010 and 2011 season and his value is therefore that of his 2009 score.

Thomas Dekker: was suspended from July 2009 untill July 2011. Even though he only had a contract with Rabobank untill August 14 2008, his contract wasn't officially terminated because of doping. His value is therefore that of his 2008 score.

Davide Rebellin: was suspended for two years untill April 27 2011. However, he was stripped off his silver medal at the 2008 Olympics, hence his doping case also affected his 2008 season and his value is therefore that of his 2007 score.

Tadej Valjavec: even though it's not stated on CQRanking.com, Valjavec is currently serving a two-year ban, and is thus not eligible to be picked for the 2012 season.

Rui Alberto Faria Costa: Costa was suspended from October 2010 untill March 2011 and his value is therefore that of his 2009 score.

4.2. Riders getting suspended during the season:

If a rider is suspended during the season it will have no immediate impact on his score. Only if he is convicted and his points are stripped on CQ Ranking's homepage will his points be adjusted in this game as well.

This means that a riders points is exactly as it is stated on CQRanking.com when the season is finished - I only download an update and load these points into the spreadsheet.

I think that about covers it. If anything is missing from the regulations, please let me know.

Hopefully we'll all have a lot of fun picking our teams and during the season - remember: it's only a game! :)

Finally, remember to visit CQRanking.com and support them - without their great work it wouldn't be possible to create this game.

Alright, here's the final spreadsheet. And to all our newcommers, here's how it works:

When you download and open the spreadsheet, the first thing you'll see is a sheet named "Rankings". This is the main screen. Here you see a list of all the teams and their score.

In column A you have "Rank". This is pretty self explanatory as it simply states what place each team currently is in.

In column B you have "Teams". Once again pretty self explanatory. You'll notice if you drag your mouse over a name on the list, that each name has a "link". If you press a team name, you'll be taken to that teams sheet where you can see which riders this specific team has.

In column C you have "Points". This is the amount of points the team has earned this season.

In column D you have "Profit" which is simply "Points" minus the value of the team (so if a team has earned 10.000 points and had a value of 7500 when sent in, "Profit" will say 2500. You'll also notice that the number appearing is either colored red or green which is simple an aesthetic little feature I've added so it's easy to quickly spot who's in the positives and who's in the negatives - I've done this for column E, F and I as well.

In column E you have "Ratio" which shows how many points the team has earned in percentages relating to the value of the team.

In column F you have "Points this week" which, unsurprisingly, shows how many points the team has earned since last update.

Column G and H are hidden as they just show some back ground statistics.

In column I you have "Up/down". This column shows how each team has moved since last update. If you're team for instance was 14th last update and 10th now, the column will show "4" because you've moved four places up.

In column J you have "Rank this week". This is basically just an elaboration of "Points this week" as this shows how you've been doing this week compared to the other teams. If you team has earned the 20th most points this week it'll show "20" in the column.

The spreadsheet is by default sorted by "Rank" so that the top team is the one that is actually ahead of the competition. However, if you want to sort by "Rank this week", "Up/down" or something else, it's simple to just highlight that column, right-click and select "Sort.." and then you can sort with the highest value on top etc.

The rest of the sheets are simply every team's individual sheet. They are sorted alphabetically so it's easy to find your team but remember that you can simply click your team name in column B and you'll be taken to your sheet.
Once you're at a team sheet, you can click on the name of the team in box "A1" and you'll be taken back to the "Rankings" sheet.

The last three sheets, "2011 Results", "2012 Results" and "Last week" you don't have to worry about. They simply include all the numbers the spreadsheet needs.

---------------

In this first edition of the spreadsheet I've inserted the 2010 values for each rider into the "2012 Results". This way you can get an idea of how it works. Basically what you'll see is how your team will do this season if all riders match their 2010 season (don't worry if it isn't 100% correct - a few riders have changed names like Betancourt -> Betancur and I didn't bother to change it. It will be fine in the next updates)

The spreadsheet will be updated when CQRanking.com updates. This is usually every week and once the latest update is available for download on CQRanking.com I'll update the spreadsheet as well and upload it for everyone to download.

---------------

That should be it.

If you spot any mistakes or errors - spelling mistakes, links that don't work etc. - please send me a PM.

Whilst i think there is a better system ;), i am happy to see that common sense has prevailed and the rules for the 2012 game are practicable and fairly simple.

I still like the team leaders idea (budget of 10k, top 3 riders > 2.5k) but i can see why continuation is preferred.

A quick question regadring Pellizotti who will be eligible again in 2013; what will his value be? CQ has failed to annul his 2009 results and he was not actually banned until 2010. I ask for a precedent because there may be similar riders available for the 2012 game.

Secondly can you please clarify your definition of 'provisionally suspended'?

ps. Many thanks for facilitating the game.

pps. Does anybody know a site which will publish the projected 2012 squad lists before the start of the season?

Regarding Pellizotti:

It's definitely a tricky case, but I think his 2008 score should count as his value. CQ Ranking will probably strip him off his results as some point.

If that's the case then his 2009 score will be affected by his doping suspension and is thus artificially corrected. In that case the previous season should count.

I'm glad you mention it because it reminds me of another rider, whom I will mention in the opening post now.

On provisionally suspended:

It's basically just another term for temporarily suspended as is the case with Alex Rasmussen for instance.

Regarding 'provisionally suspended' would this include a team imposed suspension due to links to a doping investigation (like Mantova or Padova)? How about cases in which a rider's national cycling federation clears him but the UCI appeals the decision?

I don't know the specific cases, and truth be told, I almost don't follow any doping cases so I'm probably not the best suited to make "correct" or "fair" rulings on this matter.

I do however try my best to make some overall guidelines and commenting on specific cases. In this case, the answer is "yes" to both of your questions: if a rider is provisionally suspended by his team or UCI then he's also ineligible to be picked.

I might have to consult someone with better knowledge regarding specific cases if these rules aren't that good after all.

Anyway, the short answer is "yes" :D

Sorry to be a pain but something else just occurred to me. If a team enters early they might accidentally go over the 7500 limit when a rider they have selected scores additional points.

The Tour of Rwanda ends on November 27, so you could re-check the scores after this and PM any affected teams.

I think 1 of the opening posts should contain a full table of last years scores. Even though I have many regrets towards that season, insgve and those that challenged him deserve it, and I would be interested to see the full list.

Anyone who made the top 10 is a fully certified cycling expert:D

You do know that you can download the spreadsheet and see the full standings right? :D

And we already have our first entrant! :D
Haha, seriously, people? Whoever it was, you're aware the riders you picked could get seriously injured, see their status at their team greatly reduced by some last-minute signing, or just retire from cycling to join a monastery, right?

go to CQ ranking > transfer overview

-make sure year is 2011-2012
-select team you wish to view
-search

that will list all transfers of the specific team.

just wasted half my day at working forming my team from my shortlist (more like long list). Finished with 9 points to spare. I like my team.

Not sending it in yet, as I may make changes. And some may make points.
I'd say at least 20 of the riders are certain tho.

I like my team

So far, I've spent 3666 on the riders I have. I still have 13 free slots with 3834 points left to spare.

Shouldn't the first team be Hugo Koblet to prevent any potential bias? Or shouldn't the sending of teams be closed until HK has selected his team?

It doesn't matter, if Hugo wins, we know he cheated

Seriously though, I think we trust Hugo to select his own team and not be influenced by other teams he sees, even if he is it's nothing serious.

I wouldn't even care if everyone's teams were public, that would mean that it's more about analytical skills than trawling through the CQ list and not missing any gems.

I think the teams should all be revealed together at the same time once the deadline has passed.

For the moment, the only cheating that can be done is the kind that comes from some people talking about their picks.
