Again it's very sad but i want to see who the 'experts' have picked this year.

The most surprising for me is that Phinney has been picked so many times. Sure, he's good but where is he improve and double his score? CQ wise he had his best season in 2012 scoring 849 points, but 288 of those were earned in the Olympics meaning he only scored 561 points in other races.
I'm not saying he necessarily is a bad pick, but I'm curious why so many picked him?

True, I was thinking similar. But he still, I believe has got the potential to post some results in the classics, something he didn't do last year, asides from a sixth in MSR. Also look at his age, still very young and already one of the best ITTs in the world. I don't think this year he was at his best, as shown by his world's ITT, where he didn't come close to Martin like in 2012. And his potential is definitely right up there, everyone has asserted that. He got his 561 score, but that was now two years ago.. for a 23 year old rider you would expect him to be improving on that 2 years later.

But indeed, he was a risk, I guess it is a case of waiting and seeing.

I was 'this' close to putting Hepburn on my team and indeed had him on at one point, but I then tweeted him for confirmation about his schedule and track commitments and he never replied, so I wasn't sure. He definitely seems like a good pick, considering that he focused on the track last year and became a double world champ on it, and was Aussie Track rider of year, so if he focuses more on the road this year that may prove very costly.

I thought the rules were that if your team is over limit the first rider at that value will be removed. I dont think it is right to allow any past deadline changes or corrections.

BTW how was handled the team that submitted LuLu twice in his team? Did you allow him to make change after the deadline too? If so, I would be very disappointed as we all make mistakes and we should learn from those and no exceptions should be made.

This is a yearly game. If you mess up just a little bit, you can spoil the whole game for the entire year. I think that exceptions can be made in such circumstances. After all this is only a game and of course it should remain competitive and kept as fair as possible, but at the end of the day it is all just a bit of fun.

Or, alternatively as Mc suggested, altered after the deadline teams could be asteriked * and that will be noted if they start doing very well.

The Lulu change came before the deadline (I think - I processed it the day after the deadline with a bunch of other PMs and wasn't checking the exact time). With the other teams I said I would take off the lowest rider but gave them the option of taking off another rider. I set the deadline as a couple of days before aussie nats so that necessary changes could be noticed before it affected the game. I also accepted a team or two after the deadline because someone was confused about the date and time of deadline and communicated that mistake to others, which they believed. Given the choice of being flexible by a few hours and having fewer teams in the game, I chose flexibility. Sorry if I've been more flexible than people's liking, I didn't really think about it.

Tell you what - if a team who was allowed to make a choice after the deadline wins because of that choice I can quit organizing the game, if that's what people want. I'll be happy to participate under whatever rules, but if I'm not enforcing them to people's satisfaction, I'm happy to step down in the future.

Edit: by way of context, I should add that I do understand the concerns of allowing changes well after the deadline, and it wasn't my intent to allow those. I will defend my choice to accept a couple of teams a couple of hours after deadline, I won't defend a choice to allow changes wholesale. But here's the scoop - rider values changed slightly in the Dec. 31st update, and I said in the thread that no previously submitted teams were over the limit because of this. It turns out that the spreadsheet was inconsistent, and 3 teams were put over by this (when other teams' sheets reflected these changes, something that is still puzzling to me), so I was wrong in my assurance. This wasn't discovered until yesterday, and since it was kind of my responsibility because I assured people this wasn't the case, I offered these 3 teams one change in the next 24 hours provided it had nothing to do with Aussie nationals as a compromise solution.

Anyway, I understand the 'rules are rules' perspective, but when I agreed to take on the organizational role I didn't anticipate situations like that. I feel okay with how it was handled, but given that context, if some of you are still unhappy, let me know, it's good to get an idea of what people think.

I think its totally fair to let people that made a mistake in, or if they were confused about the deadline. Its not like they did it on purpose to gain an advantage.

They should be let in and compete on equal terms as all the other teams imo.

Since youre taking the time and effort to run this thing, then I also think everyone should be happy to let you make some judgement calls like this.

These changes won't make a big difference at all i guess, so it's quite normal they are allowed. Imagine you're the one who (due to bad luck, a mistake or even your own dumb fault) is banned out of the game for the rest of the year. Reasonabilty is at its place here, so well handled by the organisation i say.
If you're concerned you might lose the game or even a few places because of this, well, you won't. It's mot like he lets people pick Hepburn instead of someone else now. No, as long as the changes are reasonable and have nothing to do with anything that happened since the deadline, a couple of hours, or even days, dont matter.

the rule for riders from the same team is one Armchair used for the GT games, when it was possible to pick a rider that would then not make the roster. as far as i recall it has no precedent in the main game, and is probably unworkable.

as for mistakes if I tell you that I had to correct the spelling or the space after one of your zero point riders so that it would pull the points through when they score should we say you dont get their points. as a rule such as this would make it much easier to organise.

this is a game that is free to play, with nothing to benefit but the honour of doing well, provided by people volunteering their time. rather than as skidmark says he should withdraw if you are unhappy perhaps it is you that should reconsider your participation if you are unhappy.

Its a game and to my knowledge no money is being handed out its all in fun. I'm new and this is my 1st year and would want the option to correct my mistake and still play the game. To me its just a game so everybody have fun.

yep that should be sorted. if a pro rider called CHAVES Johan Esteban emerges and scores a load of points you're not allowed to claim them though!

This is just a bit of fun! There is no reward for winning this game to me and I imagine many others it just adds a different dimension to the season ahead. Skidmark and the others who give their time should be thanked and not criticised. Mistakes will occur and as long as it is all open then there should be no issue. The post having a dig at Skidmark was out of line in my opinion.

After all thats how the double LuLu team realized he made a mistake. He posted his team and other player noticed the mistake. So he saw all the other teams and was allowed to remove the duplicated value (LuLu) add another rider instead? Sorry, even if that is only a game, that will leave a mark on it and I called it a BS. You should simply removed the duplicated value and he should have just 32 riders.

Same for all the others that were allowed to swap riders after we all posted our teams.

... I just realized that I also made a mistake, can I also swap some of my riders?

My team falls just outside the most popular 10. I don't think i missed anyone I'm kicking myself over though I might be come the Giro. The super popular picks I missed were Uran, Taaramae, Hesjedal, and Anacona. The middle two are risky for various reasons, Uran will make points, but i don't think enough for someone so expensive, and Anacona...well I won't be missing too many points, max 400.

well teams have only been posted, so far, by people that wanted to post them. the spreadsheet is still underwraps.

if you cant acknowledge after several posts demonstating it, that you are out of sink with everyone else, then perhaps you want to withdraw from the game if it is so badly damaged now. If you continue with this line, I will be strongly tempted to omit your team from the updates I will post - and you can count your points manually.

You have no right whatsoever to dictate the rules of this game.

What is more damaging to the game is people (well in this case one solitary person) criticising a perfectly reasonable judgement call by someone who has committed a huge amount of time to ensure that this game will continue. I'm staggered that you cant see that.

EvansIsTheBest appreciate the effort but I'm pretty sure I participated in 2012 and 2013... so two years I think you only counted 2013 (not that it matters because in 2012 my team was super crappy )

With regards to alterations:

1. This game is supposed to be for fun

2. I understand those that put all the effort into organising it not wanting to exclude or lessen the enjoyment of those that have made an honest mistake and agree wholeheartedly with this principle.

3. However the details of most popular riders shouldn't have been released until all changes had been PM'd. Perhaps this was the case anyway but i think in future this would be a good rule. Give teams that have an error 24 hours past the deadline to correct it after which time such data and/or the spreadsheet can be released.

I was speechless and rather did not response to that comment. I cant believe anybody would be so hostile just for posting my opinion on how the post deadline changes are handled.

Being around since 2009 and playing the CQ game every year since the first edition, I would hope for just a tiny bit more respect from another forum member.

This makes it the third year in row that I am in the top ten in terms of having the most common picks. I didn't think I was so unoriginal. Oh well, it worked out well in 2012 (though less so last year), so perhaps I will have another go at the top ten.

Seems I'm even worse than you at making the boring common picks as second in both 2013 and 2014 and also top 10 in 2012

But with the two other guys in the top of these lists of common picks all 3 years like The Hitch and Skidmark topping the alltime points list, I guess it is not really a bad thing to be well placed in this, despite it being a bit unoriginal.

If I do not end in the top 3 this season with my boring picks I will probably have to reconsider my conservative strategy for next year and try taking more chances. At least that would be more fun than being disciplined and boring with the picks and not winning.
