Ugh, the week had such promise. Particularly disappointing is having guys up there but not finishing. Case in point in G-W - I can be happy with Bennett's 35 points for 12th place as a stand-alone score, but (other than the ubiquitous Boonen) having that the best result in a small field that also included Phinney and Boasson Hagen is frustrating - I didn't pick EBH because I think he'll suddenly break through on his classics-winning promise, but because I think he can be there and thereabouts and as a good sprinter he should be able to finish at the top of whatever pack he finishes in. But he seems to never really go for it. Same result on Wednesday in Dwaars Door Vlaanderen - Danny Van Poppel in the lead group, great sprinter, but didn't sprint, whether it was that he didn't have the legs or bad positioning or whatever.
Contador once again saves my team from total embarrassment, but it's pretty close to that. Other than him, I got 32 points from Hesjedal for 15th place, a bit from Aru for 20th, and some finishing points pretty much.
Coppi e Bartali - nothing. Dombrowski, who talent-wise I believe is better than Kennaugh, doesn't even finish a 3 day 2.1 race and gets put on the B squad for the TT. I know his goals are later, but this is worrisome. Teklehaimanot isn't some GC god, but I expect him to have at least some kind of leadership role at MTN. But nope, nothing.
Criterium International I had some promise in the TT from Dennis, Coppel and Craddock, but they were nowhere on the climb. I know Dennis is just coming back into form, but what about those other guys?
Classics, bad luck with Phinney, could have had a load of points from MSR and probably this week too. Fingers crossed for the next two Sundays. EBH did nothing, Le Bon was nowhere, etc etc. This is feeling like last year's team all over again.
Tallying it up, I guess I got about 570 points (probably missed a few minor ones) so I can stay afloat with that. But really, it could have been so much better.
I did, however, find the
best cyclist name I've ever seen when looking through the CQ results this week, so at least it wasn't a total write-off.
