i this idea to create a thread where we could post any kind of cycling equipment that is a good bargain in price/quality.

what do you guys think?

Back in 2003 I purchased a aluminium training bike with 9 speed 105 for $1999Aus dollars and thought it was the bargin of the century. I could not believe that any bike so cheap could be so good.

Almost all the new bikes at a mid range level are a bit of a bargin. Ultegra 10 speed bikes for 2k!!! Its crazy.

the only bigger bargains are the top range bikes from this era. My cannondale caad4 with ksyrium sl's and full Dura ace in perfect condition for 600. Still very racable and kinda retro cool.

The real bargins for both bike and gear are in the mid range. If your ego can afford it you can gets some great stuff for nothing.

that's kind of the spirit of the thread i was trying to get. forget about top of the range equipment and post middle range stuff that works very well and isn't all that expensive.

after all not every1 has the money to buy that kind of stuff and could use some advice on this and a lot of people on this forum know a lot about how to build a good bike with a nice budget.

i for example already know what i am going to buy but first i need to negotiate a loan with my father so i can pay him back during the summer by working, ya it will be the first bike i will buy with my own money so it won't be nothing out of the worlds (middle range like you said) but i bet i will feel much better in it then if my father had paid for it himself. and i bike many people are in similar situations like me

Where to begin?

Just to keep it simple, I suggest omitting used equipment.

Direct carbon equipment YMMV
Yi Shun: http://www.shop-yishunbike.com/ easy pricing!
Deng Fu: http://dengfubikes.com/ a Great Keen brand. Be a tough negotiator on the price of the frame, but shipping and duties is not something any direct seller can influence.

American bargains reselling OEM.
bike nashbar's alloy framesets +/- $100!
pricepoint's Sette branded bikes are a fair deal. I don't know if they actually follow-through on warranty support though...

Bar end shifters! Cheap and simple.

I use some of my mountaineering gear for cold weather cycling.

Outdoor Research windstopper Alpine Hat. They cost less than $20. I think you can find them for $15 or less. They work better than any of the cycling specific ones that I have.

But they don't have conspicuous corporate ads on them!

i bought a berg 750ml bottle for 1,5€ i thought it was going to be crap and make the water taste like plastic but surprise surprise i just washed it once before going out for the first time and no plastic flavour at all.

a much better deal than 7.5€ for a 500ml scoot bottle . . .

Rema tube patches are a deal at $.25 each (qty 100). What with the price of tubes going up and up and up.

tubulars

There's a place in Madison WI that sells three (3) tubulars for $50. Choice of black. They also have the expensive ones.

Yellow Jersey is the name. They got a web site too.

Deals are out there to be had!

1. Sign up for the newsletter/sales from your favorite On-Line stores.
2. Search for On-Line stores to see what they have, some might have a ton of your favorite items, contact them, ask questions, get reviews for their stores. Work on possible deals with them.
3. Put in saved searches for the part/bike you want and see what comes up.

Yea, you have to be patient and deal with the e-mail barrage, filters are your friend for this.

I lost count of all the deals I have obtained from On-Line stores clearing out their merchandise.

So Competitive Cyclist has PRO3 Race clinchers for $30/each. I was always a big fan of the PRO2 tires, but I had terrible luck with destroying the PRO3s. After going through several in a couple of months, I jumped ship.

The PRO3s (in my experience) aren't worth $60, but are they worth $30? Ugh. I think they may be, and I'm seeing some side wall wear on my current rear tire. Blow-out inevitable. But I hate to put on tires that I fear are unreliable--especially in crazy spring weather!

What are your thoughts? Good deal? Not worth it?

A lot of people seem to complain about the Pro 3s, but I've had extremely good luck with them. Granted, I use them as they were designed to be used, a race tire. I don't use them for training. They are the best clinchers I've ever used for handling and for grip. Sure, they don't last long, but as I said, it's a race tire. And if you want a great deal on these, here you go. I just ordered 6 of them myself. $25 a pop.

Haha yeah, you got me there. You can file tibbs under Too Lazy to Change Tires w/ Only One Wheelset. Whatever tires I have on at the time are what I ride. :p

Thanks for the link. I'll pick up a pair. If nothing else, I'll be looking sexy with colored side walls for a bit! ;) :)
