The chance of seeing the riders more than once (as a spectator)

The routes of the Tour de France rarely have circuits, so it's normally impossible to be standing at the roadside and watch the riders more than once a day. But maybe it can be done on some of the mountains - or is it just to steep and too crowded if you try to "run across" the hairpins? I haven't been at the Tour de France in the Alps yet.

But I did go to north-western Sealand to see the first battles for the King of the Mountain points earlier this month. My plan was to run from the first hill top to the next. Here is how it went:

Time trials are the way to go for spectating, especially if you're with someone who isn't really a fan of the sport. You see all the bikes, riders, gadgets etc. Doubly so if it starts and finishes in the same town.

Some races like Fleche Wallone do laps over a specific section of the course. However, that is not typical of most races. Laps seem more likely for Worlds than for other races.
