is there a thread which lists the PEDs used in pro cycling, their gains and effects.

If not can we have one?

I think it might be helpful if we had a thread purely explaining the PEDs and how they work, what the side effects are etc...

Finasteride

Good thread idea. I'll start with Finasteride because it's a very rare curate's egg and it's totally not worth the risks associated with prolonged use.

What is it?

Wikipedia article - helps with prostate troubles and, perhaps more commonly, the evil curse of male baldness ...

Why's it banned?

... And it also happens to mask steroids.

Who uses it?

- José Antonio Pecharroman Fabian ES (violation 2007)
- Oscar Grau ES (violation 2005)

Side effects

Can cause birth defects, impotence, abnormal ejaculation, erectile dysfunction. Think I'd rather lose my hair. ;)

This was a list of the drugs that Jesus Manzano admitted taking during his career. In some of his interviews he has mentioned what the exact benefits of the different PED's.

From CyclingNews March 2004:

Actovegin (extract of calves blood which supposedly improves oxygen carrying capacity)
Albumina H. (protein in blood plasma)
Androgel (testosterone)
Aranesp (Darbepoetin alfa = super EPO)
Celestote (corticosteroid)
Eprex (EPO)
Genotorm (growth hormone)
Hemoce (plasma)
Deca durabolin (anabolic steroid)
Humatrope (growth hormone)
IgF1 (insulin growth factor 1)
Neofertinon (hormone to stimulate ovulation and estrogen production)
Neorecormon (hormone that regulates red blood cell production)
Norditropin (growth hormone)
Nuvacten (corticosteroid)
Trigon (asthma drug)
Urbason (corticosteroid)
Ventolin (bronchial dilator)
Oxandrolona (anabolic agent)
Vitamin B12 (essential B vitamin)
Triamcinolona (corticosteroid)
Testoviron (testosterone)
Aspirina (analgesic, anti-inflammatory)
Oxyglobin (artificial haemoglobin intended for anaemic dogs)
Hemopure (artificial haemoglobin)
Ferlixit (iron)
Caffeine (stimulant)
Hemassist (artificial haemoglobin)

Maybe it would be easier to list stuff which is not used as PED in cycling.

Isn't it easier to just cite the WADA Code?
You'll find it at http://wada-ama.org/Documents/World...hibited-list/WADA_Prohibited_List_2010_EN.pdf
It's quite a menial job to compile a complete list WITH gains and effects, as they're not mentioned in the Code, but it can be done if you've got a lot of time on your hands. I sure haven't.

There are studies which have summarized the various studies...

As far as I can tell, none of these have free access and must be paid for.

Here is an extract from one such study (Bouchard et al):
...Caffeine acts directly on working muscles, blocks adenosine receptors, inhibits cAMP phosphodiesterase activity, produces central nervous system activation and increased respiratory ventilation, functions as an antioxidant, and increases lipolysis, catecholamine release, cortisol release, potassium release, and levels of intracellular calcium. ...

I'm heading out for a coffee.

Dave.
