Anyway, we love Wawa here in France, even if he really isn't much of a rider anymore. And having him and Bardet on the same team is like 2017 tdf nostalgia overload.

He’s still a good rider, had a couple of good days at the Giro this year and wasn’t bad last season. He’s also a solid points scorer which is something DSM could do with.

The type of guy that blames everyone but himself, bad mentality. Went to DSM because they were so much better than Lotto just to crawl back 8 months later. Hope he changed somewhat, he had a lot of talent.
He was sick, didn't start fit, has been struggling since April. He was decent at the beginning of the season.
Of course, but it ended badly, as it did for a lot of sunweb/DSM riders. It's not a sentiment you often hear.

If he is as terrible as you make him out to be, surely Lotto wouldn't be taking him back (with immediate effect might I add).
We all know there is something rotten in the state of DSM, and sooner or later we will find out why they have such a hard time keeping riders. We've reached the point where we all know something bad or borderline-legal is going on. But we'll only say (I knew it) when a documentary or hit-piece article is released by some journalist with quotes from former riders.

Never said he's terrible. He still has a lot of talent, and Lotto Dstny needs climbers. His mentality was fine in the beginning of his career, it was just the last year that was problematic. It's worth the gamble as they probably could get him on a discount. If he turns it around, starts looking at himself, and starts training like a pro (and as a climber), it could be a good transfer. Van de Wouwer isn't the type of guy that holds a grudge, he gives second chances, just like he did with Vandenabeele (who's struggling with Long Covid).
He's also really close friends with Van Gils who vouched for him.
Me being somewhat negative about Vanhoucke has nothing to do with what I take about DSM btw. I genuinly dislike that team, but I have also no empathy with riders who still choose to ride for them. They should know better, especially Belgians. Benoot, Van Wilder, Vandenabeele, Vanhoucke, how many examples do they need. And still we have young talents like Vlad Van Mechelen choosing them.

Name me an Italian talent who hasn't followed this same path in the last 5 years.
Battistella, Baroncini, Aleotti, Covi, Piccolo, Tiberi... For one reason or another, they can't seem to develop as youngsters from other countries.
Someone like Zana (who nobody saw coming) has actually improved to the point he's the better prospect at the moment.
Or course the track guys are the exception here... and I wonder why.

Track guys are usually followed by capable Track coaches (alongside their u23 road cycling team) who have the best interest in developing them long term, while certain bigger u23 teams, mainly Colpack, have a rep for just trying to sqeeze results out of young riders and they are already burned out when they turn pro.
Things that have to be discussed in another subforum might also be a factor. You also have more and more young Italians who retire after 1 or 2 years in the pro ranks. The latest one is Simone Raccani, who was riding his first pro season with Eolo and had finished 3rd in the Giro della Valle d' Aosta last year. A few years ago he also put over 1min into Mathias Vacek in an Italian junior one day race with a big MTF, when Vacek already dominated the Italian junior scene.
