Peak is an interesting signing - Never quite fitted in at BEX who pigeon-holed as a punchy rider, yet in one Italian stage race he was second to Ackermann in a bunch sprint which surprised the team.

This whole week you can follow the final stage of the Zwift Academy. Both a man and a woman will get a pro contract with Alpecin Fenix or Canyon SRAM. The first episode of the final week was published yesterday on youtube.

It may not be bike racing, but indoor riding using virtual software is becoming more and more prevelant with the lockdowns in many countries probably helping to accelerate it. Canyon Sram and Alpecin obviously see that it is worth investing time and effort into searching for these riders via the Zwift (academy) platform. Previously it's been done rather seperately between the two teams, but these last two editions seem to be more interconnected. Last year was differen t because of covid, so a lot more of it was online but the riders still had to complete set parts outdoors, whereas this year I think the majority is outdoors with just a couple of tests and races indoors.

Also, I think most riders who apply and get close to the final five have some level of racing experience, with some even being continental riders.

I don’t know a lot about online cycling. But, yeah, I’d always assumed that almost everyone who is so outstandingly strong at it they are in the running to win a competition like this would have tried at least some road racing. Or failing that would be a serious competitor at some other endurance sport who uses it for cardio training. I know that zwift and peloton etc are quite a big thing these days, but if you are good enough to be in the running to win a pro road racing contract based purely on your watts, you probably aren’t a random fitness enthusiast, but quite specialised in your cycling interest.

Yeah, I don't know what Ryder's been telling him, or how close they've actually been to securing a future, but form the outside it never looked like it was going to end well. Chapeau to him for staying loyal to the team, but if he really wants to continue for a bit longer he should have started to look for contract elsewhere a long time ago.

He said that he's trying to put up a professional now that the WT license is gone. But from what I've understood the backing from Assos, BMC and Mercedes was under the condition of being in the WT so basically he has no fund at all without a new backer.

I guess Pozzovivo is still big enough of a name that an Italian PCT team would get extra money from the sponsors/find additional ones to sign him.
I guess he's loyal towards Ryder because the team gave him a contract after that horrible training crash when he was run over by a car (Bahrain didn't re-sign him after that).
Having Pozzovivo go for stages/KoM would really improve the profile of pretty much all the Italian PCT teams.
