Teams & Riders The "MVP" Mathieu Van der Poel Road Discussion Thread

Page 242 - Get up to date with the latest news, scores & standings from the Cycling News Community.
A happy thread filled with lots of happy people since a star of pro-cycling showered spectators with a heavy dose of his saliva.

The man has fans. The rest (including the bickering) was probably predictable.

You lambast cancel culture unironically after a couple of guys tried to cancel me since I happened to post 'Europe' & 'civilized' in the same sentence, irrespective of context, aka anything to demolish a critical viewpoint & the person behind the keyboard. I mean Jesus...

Back in the real world (& yes, considering who the Dutch just elected), this is all very puny. But something which isn't puny is the act of spitting on spectators. It's a big deal because it's a rarity. Ergo not a regular occurrence.

I don't make this up. People just need to deal with it instead of constantly attacking his critics.
Move on.

You seem to be incapable of recognizing that you don't need to be a huge fan of MVDP to still think that this is a storm in a teacup, and certainly not a bannable offense. I'm sure he's not happy or proud about it, but at least the idiots will think twice next time about booing him and certainly about throwing p.ss on him.

Yelling at you from the street below? How about if they were coming up to your office and throwing beer (and perhaps even urine!) on you? The people here thinking MVDP is supposed to apologize are f***ed in the head.
That last sentence is wow, just wow. We might not agree, but you might want to rethink your stance on people that don't agree with you on this matter.

Let's just say all the things reported were true, do you think VDP's spitting aim is that good that he wouldn't unintentionally hit some innocent bystanders as well? He was leading the race that much that it would have been a way more powerful move to just mount off and tell the douches to go f themselves, then remount and race on to win.

Of course he should get punished with a fine of some sort, and then UCI should adress the issue with the fans. If Matthieu appologises or not should be up to him (personally I would after thinking things through), but I'd say his initial defense with spitting because of booing seems a little out of wack. Urine and beer justify being mad, but there was plenty of more fitting ways to show that IMO.

Some people need to stop living their life on the internet. Stop being a keyboard warrior. Stop this cancel culture. Stop being this brainwashed.

You are insane if you are going really hard at MVDP to try and crucify him. Calling on him to be banned for a year? Such an overreaction.
Who called for that? I didn't see anything of such. No crucifiction, but some ppl calling his action gross and penalisable, and some ppl excusing his action with various reasons. His actions IMO can't be excused, but understood nonetheless.

There was an incident in football a few years ago when Marcus Thuram (French player, son of the world champion Lilian) spat on an opposition player during a match: https://www.lefigaro.fr/sports/foot...m-apres-son-crachat-sur-un-adversaire-1026798

He got a six match ban, 40000 euro fine + a 150000 euro fine from his club. And that's football, aka one of the nastiest sports out there. Focusing on fan behavior as justification for VdP's behavior (without any proof of urine or beer throwing either) is just a deflection. It is what it is.

And?

Just my opinion but a world champion should not be indulged when he behaves badly. We can clearly see the mood amongst the fanbase is to absolve the man entirely of wrongdoing (they're having a meltdown on Wielerflits... over the mere fine he already received).
fanbase... yawn. I would say the very same thing about any other rider (van der haar, Iserbyt, Ronhaar, van Aert, Nieuwenhuys,...). I'm nowhere near a fan of MvdP, always have been cheering for WvA or the few times Toon Aerts was able to make life difficult for MvdP (remember the Hotond cross):

I have never been anti-MvdP though (like any other rider, except when they are racist or kill cats): he's the kind of generational talent (Cancellara, Boonen, Valverde, Sagan, Contador, Pogacar,...) that defines cycling for a period of 10 years, and I fully acknowledge that.
Bias is one hell of a drug.
Bias? Is that the thing that makes you try connect the spitting incident with the girls in Australia etc?

ps: Are you the twin brother of Maquisard on weight weenies, by coincidence? The parallels are too clear to ignore: both of you are trying to push your opinion on the crowd, while the crowd goes: "meh, move on".
