A 23 year old CX/MTB rider, who isn't necessarily a sprinter based on his results on the road so far, beating some okayish French (pro)conti sprinters and sprint talents in the sprint, while struggling with a wrist injury, and in the middle of his MTB season, is still pretty decent if you ask me, even if the field in and of itself is a bit underwhelming.

Mathieu posted his prologue Watts on instagram stories. I expected it to be a little bit higher. But I am definitely no expert. I googled his weight and found 75 kg. Data from instagram:

5" 1301 W
10" 1111 W
12" 1077 W
20" 937 W
30" 895 W
1' 750 W
2' 618 W
5' 545 W
6' 523 W

5' power which is often used as a surrogate for VO2max capabilities here comes out to 7.25 w/kg. that's right in line with the recorded values of thibaut pinot from his 2010-2013 period as referenced here: http://www.fredericgrappe.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/pinot-ppr.pdf

In my opinion that's right in line with his top talent status. From this it looks like he definitely has the engine to make it big on the road as well.

75kg? I highly doubt that. I can't really find much information about his weight and height but I'm seeing Wout Van Aert is listed on many websites at ~187cm and ~72-73kg and Mathieu looks to be a tad shorter and much more slender'. I'd guesstimate ~183cm and ~68kg.

I had the same feeling. My source was: https://cyclingtips.com/2017/11/mathieu-van-der-poel-is-most-talented-bike-racer-on-planet/

(BTW a nice article, but I am sceptical about the 'most talented ever' thing)

Not involved today, but didn´t need to. He won the overall classification. Nice comeback at the road with a stage win and overall win.

Does anybody know if he will compete in the Dutch nationals?

Fell hard on his wrist again, cant MTB for 2 weeks but will defend his title on the road in Boucles de la Mayenne in 2 days and after that will ride the Dutch national road championships.

No idea if he has any other plans on the road this season.
Dwars door het Hageland (15-06)
Elfstedenronde (17-06)
Halle-Ingooigem (19-06)

According to the team website he will also ride the Ronde van Limburg on 10/06. Dwars door het Hageland takes place on the 4th of August.

Edit: Dwars door het Hageland is on 15/06, my info was wrong :D

Hey Flo, Wout Van Aert is now heavier than 72/73kg. I seem to remember his saying he was around 76/77kg duing last year's edition of the Tour of Belgium. The data you've found might date from his early years when he was much lighter and perhaps even shorter in height. This being said, I agree it's doubtful that Mathieu weighs 75kg. That's normally too heavy for cyclocross practice. I find it remarkable that Wout can still cross so well with that body weight.

Cheers :)

If Wout can do it than so can MvP, I'm surprised to find out he's shorter then WvA. Probably because I'm used to seeing them together in CycloX where WvA is always sitting lower/more above his steer so he can get the power out of his thigs and legs where as MvP uses his technical skills more and his back.

At 55 km he destroyed the peleton with an attack of a few kms. At 40 he goes again with 3 others. Among them is van Poppel who stays in the last wheel. In the last 10 kms they are caught and then he wins the sprint. Awesome!
