Well that was a lot of hype for nothing. 1 Sunweb rider was all it took to end his spring campaign.

Horrible accident. I hope he isn't as badly hurt as it appeared. The crash basically screwed the finish too making a nonsense of several hours hard racing.

Luckily looks like MVP will be fine - no fractures according to C-C FB page:

Nokere Koerse didn’t end as we expected. A nasty crash for Mathieu van der Poel in the final straight line and afterwards they took him away with the ambulance to the hospital. Luckily, no fractures has been determined. Only abrasions and bruises. With these circumstances, he will be able to complete his road program as planned.

I've watched that replay a few times and I don't quite get what's going on - Walscheid slows as if to drop out of the sprint for some reason, and the CCC guy coming up on his left with speed doesn't anticipate this and takes him out. I'm curious to hear what the heck Walscheid was doing, or if he had a mechanical and it was just one of those things.

I've watched that replay a few times and I don't quite get what's going on - Walscheid slows as if to drop out of the sprint for some reason, and the CCC guy coming up on his left with speed doesn't anticipate this and takes him out. I'm curious to hear what the heck Walscheid was doing, or if he had a mechanical and it was just one of those things.

He was leading them out. Was taking his turn until he swung the elbow and let himself fall through the pack. Pretty normal standard formula. It appears that the CCC rider and tried to squeeze through a space that wasn't there when they passed Walscheid thus touching. The fall itself looks a bit off though, wasn't that hard of a touch.

Don't think Walscheid is the one to blame here though.

I dont't know about too risky but it of course is more dangerous than cross. Then again, it' hard to find a more dangerous place than the beginning of the Nokereberg. They descend with 70 kph at least until they hit it, and it's on cobbles, making it a bit more dangerous than a regular bunch sprint. Really a pity for him but surely it will not discourage him. Unless he is looking for excuses to not do road racing.

Two interesting articles on Sporza. In one, Mathieu is now minimizing expectations for Ronde van Vlaanderen. He felt there were a few parts of the course yesterday, that were heavier than he imagined them to be. And that also a lot can happen in a race. Second article is from one of the doctors that were present, who outright denies the claim about Gerts not being looked after. Gerts was looked after first by two medics, even before the first medic checked van der Poel. That was exactly what was shown live on Eurosport. Van der Poel alone with teamriders on the tarmac, while a medic was checking Gerts. Ban the trolls who says otherwise.

I think the rolling over saved him. If you stop immediately you're more than likely to break something.

Either way, I do think it will cost him some % of fitness for Denain

Yeah, it did look like he had some judo fall practice in his life.

It looked like what hurt him most was the rider crashing into him after he stopped rolling.

He was certainly en pleine forme today in the GP de Denain. 20k of cobbles. He rode away from the field. Granted it was Coupe de France, but impressive nonetheless.

Dont think we need more confirmation that he blew things way out of proportion last week after the crash. He had nothing at all.
