Watching Eurosport CX and the commentators cannot even criticize the guy for spitting at the fans

MVDP is on another level, but this is awful awful behaviour and he should be sanctioned in some way.
Not saying lose his win, but you cant spit into the crowd for any reason.
According to the broadcast, he was upset because he was being booed constantly, not even beer throwing or anything like that.

But actually quite shocking that the media is so on his *** that they let him off on this. Imagine if Moscon did the same!!!

He will get a sanction for it I'm pretty sure.

Ban him for a year.

I just saw the pictures. What the hell was that? For the current road world champ to behave like that... is just not right, nor is it good for the sport either.

On the spectrum of 'assaults on fans', he probably would have been better off punching someone. Spitting is just nasty.

I met MvdP several times. Always friendly always taking time for the fans.

Spitting is wrong and he should behave himself, but those weren't fans. UCI will fine him, and the forum mob will have a field day, but after all of this has settled, MvdP is still, most of the times, a very likeable guy.

None of that matters.

His post race comments are something else as well, i.e. citing the booing as justification. It's messed up. This is pro-sport. If athletes can't control these types of gross impulses when they're booed, where the hell is this going? So no, he needs to be punished for this one.

I want to see what you would do if those guys are already booing you in the warm up. I haven't seen anything more, but who knows they were throwing beer as well as happens often.
Ask yourself what those kind of guys are doing at the race? They're no better than hooligans, but the difference is that hooligans concentrate most of their negative energy on the opposite side of hooligans, not on the players.

But re-read what I said about the forum mob. Enjoy your field day! :)

I really don't care about any negative label I'm assigned here.

Cycling isn't a bubble. It's professional sport. In pro-sport, athletes don't spit at fans when they're booed (or insulted). It's just the way it is.

Imagine if Max Verstappen did that? He'd be crucified. Think about this rationally (aka leave your rider fandom out of this) & you'll reach the same conclusion.

Well, we know where things can go when fans can't control their impulses when their favorite teams/athletes get beaten.

So he 'pre-emptively' spat in their faces? What on earth am I reading here.

Guys, Van der Poel f*cked up. Badly. There's no way this can be sugar-coated.

Not from me, he wouldn't.

No, it was a general remark about behavior among certain types of fans, across all kinds of sports. It's good to see someone not get away with it for once.

Maybe you try to leave out your fandom.
You seem to demand that pro sporters are any better human beings as you would like them to be. Well, they are not. They have better legs (cyclists), better ball control (football players) etcetera. But they aren't perfect in other aspects of their personality. It showed here, but to crucify them for this...

He'll get punished. Which is deserved.

Even more so in a covid era. I mean look, spitting in someone's face is disgusting under any circumstance but even more so after the past 3 years. There's no excuse here. None.

Just deal with it.

I really cannot stomach any "oh but really he's an okay dude & they were bad people" excuses here. Everyone can wheel out the excuses when they screw-up. It's not unique to Van der Poel. But he still screwed up & made a huge mistake.

Well, it seems you'll be happy to see him banned! That's at least one person.

You expect your sports heroes to be holier-than-thou infallible demi-gods who never display any sort of reaction when they're insulted or assaulted. MVDP is not that type of person, that's what makes him endearing to a lot of people. He wears his emotions on his sleeve. If a couple of annoying Aussie teenagers are knocking on his hotel room door in the middle of the night, he'll let them know what he thinks of them. If a couple of drunk Belgians insult him and throw beer on him, he'll answer in kind.

edit: apparently they were even throwing urine on him. I think MVDP deserves applause for not stopping and taking a p.ss in their faces.

So i guess Cian is off the hook now? Sometimes you do something in an affect you might latter regret. And the action of spitting will for sure be held against him whenever the opportunity arise. So in my opinion he should consider and apologize for it.

Said that. Now as for if they deserved it? Hard to say as i don't know the details involved. Honestly. I wouldn't be all that surprised, considering the world we live in ATM.

But regardless, it's problematic, as from now on likely the relationship is tainted, to such extent Mathieu will only do road. And among all the places it needed to be his home bois and gals.
