Love / Hate - but he's helping the sport

Love him or hate him, you have to admit that he's elevated the ranking of this sport amongst the US audience, and that's good for all of us Yankies.

For me, I sell cycling gear online... with the current recession, I must Praise Lance! Thanks buddy!

For those of you with old Postal and Disco Jersey's that don't care to wear them anymore, let me tell you, there's plenty of Lance fans out there willing to buy... I can help... check us out!

Don't you think the cancer itself had something to do with that BB? I mean, let's say Lance headed to Ferrari in 1995 and by 1996 started to respond to Ferrari's "treatment". But by that time his cancer had spread from his nuts into his abdomen, chest, and even into his brain. This had to have been taking a large toll on anyone. Once the cancer was radiated out of his system and he recovered, he had to have been healthier overall. Then responded better to whatever treatment he got from Ferrari. No??? Plus he weighed a touch less, spun more, focused singularly on the Tour, rode for the most powerful team, etc. etc. etc.

I actually remember reading somewhere that based on the amounts of cancer in his body when it was caught that it probably had been there before he became a professional.

Other side note BB......Motorola purposely pulled him from the first to TDFs as he was too young and they didn't want to have long term affects. Plus Indurain was a 5 time winner that didn't do too well in his first couple TDFs as well. Plus didn't he only race certain races so he could focus on the Tour. I think i remember that he got a lot of heat from the Spanish fans because he chose not to ride the Vuelta. Long story short, riders stopped riding a full calendar back after Lemond won in 89...he changed the face of racing to be more focused.

Disagree. Most current riders still ride a full calendar. The majority of the GC candidates will ride the spring classics (especially LBL and Amstel Gold), two of the Grand Tours, World Championships, and then finish up with Lombardia. That's April to October, not June to July.

LeMond definitely began the trend of putting more focus on just the Tour but lets not forget, he usually rode the Giro(usually very badly) and shock, horror Paris-Roubaix, he was top 20 in the first year teammate Duclos-Lassalle won. The last major Tour contender to ride P-R I think. Also won Tour du Pont in 92 as well.

The only year Indurain didnt ride a Grand Tour before the Tour was 95/96.

Ullrich never done much early season but it was always fun to watch him struggle with his extra layers early season.

Pantani, won the Giro before winning the Tour in 98.

Lance would show up at Amstel, disappear again until Midi-Libere(if it was on) when it was run, then Dauphine or Switzerland, Tour, see ya. It was only when Gerogia started that we seen Lance before end of April. It worked for him so why not but he really was the guy who started the 2 month season.

He did finish third in the Giro once. As for P-R he was fourth in 85 and in with a good shot at the win in 86 before flatting late in the race. I still remember him standing at the side of the road holding his flat wheel and snarling at a fan who got too close.

Time for a bump.

Good one! The love and hate has been seeping through into other threads... It's that time of the year, or as Cheney would say "hunting season?"

I haven't seen much love in other threads, just lots and lots of hate. I also think that many new(er) posters who wouldn't normally necessarily think of themselves as 'fanboys', feel compelled to react to the vicious hatred (posted by a relatively small group) in a manner that they normally wouldn't think of, were that hatred (and DOPE/PED) either confined to certain topics or to a separate forum. That way you can chose whether or not to get involved in "hunting season".
