Fed loses to Basilashvili. Surprising to me in that I thought the matchup was quite benign for Fed, but he was just running on fumes after 1 set. He wasn't joking about being super tired yesterday.

Probably needs a big training camp before we learn a lot more, doubt we'll learn anything useful in Dubai.

Meanwhile, Karatsev post match interviews are my new favorite thing in tennis.

What does he say, what does he say...?

And it was even the older of those who won. Nice, Rafa seems more ready for Roland Garros than I would have thought a few weeks ago. The machine keeps rolling.
Djokovic had played 5 hours over 2 matches the on Saturday. I'd expected Nadal to win easier than that.

Meanwhile, Federer loses his first match in 3 months, just not looking good.

Federer is done. He missed a golden opportunity at wimbledon two years ago, to at least hold off Đoković and Nadal a while longer, but it’s only a matter of time before they both overtake him.
Strongly looks like it. IMO a lot of fans are blinded by the few good patches he has in a match but the good patches will always look good while the bad patches are why he can't beat a 35 year old Andujar. The lack of improvement between Doha and Geneva is the most worrying thing for his fans. He could have played earlier in Madrid, Rome or anywhere really and decided not to, he chose a home tournament with fans as the only tournament. It strongly looks like a goodbye Tour.

I don't think Serena will win another Open either.
Probably not. But the WTA doesn't have the equivalent of Nadal/Djokovic stopping Fed at the last stages lately, and ultimately Bo3 with days off is the reason Serena can still compete in Grand Slams IMO. For the ladies, Grand Slams are the physically least demanding events.

That said, Serena sometimes seems more like a semi retired influencer anyway, and the question I have is how long would she continue before calling it quits.

I think her reasoning doesn't sound great, though. It's the task of journalists to ask uncomfortable questions. Would have been better if she had said those press conferences are a waste of time for everyone and the questions an insult to the intelligence of humankind.
It makes no sense, considering press conferences are much more boring than stressing, I haven't actually seen any journalist giving her a particularly hard time, and if you're dealing with mental health issues, then drawing all the attention to yourself doesn't make the least bit of sense.

I think she expected to get some positive attention for this or something, but both the 4 Grand Slams and all the other players just said "lol what"

Oh I only just read her new announcement, I had only read the older one about the questions of the journalists bringing her down. Now it sounds way more understandable.

That's what I thought, too, but if it's true she suffers from depression and forces herself to go through the public life I'm way more understanding... don't know. I better don't say anymore, I don't follow tennis closely.

IMO then you just take a break from the game, quit social media or stuff like that. Press conferences would be the least of the triggers IMO.

She got some sympathy from former players but not much from the current ones.
