Ayuso was very symptomatic. He just kept testing "negative". He lost more than 3 minutes in the TT due to his illness

Because he's symptomatic and probably getting worse? Infections are rarely 1:1 comparable, the doctor is gonna have to make the decision, and given Evenepoel is SQS star rider with a looong contract I would tread very carefully.
If the infection is just starting to get symptomatic the last 2 days, he's not winning the Giro and it's a high risk 0 reward strategy.

That's impressive considering he only finished 2'17 behind Evenepoel.
He also finished 2nd of the GC contenders behind Evenepoel 2 days before and s.t. with Evenepoel days after.

I think if it's too bad right now and he gets slightly better on the rest day you don't want to risk a relapse anyway, and you don't wanna expose other riders either.

There is a rest day and the stages right after aren't too difficult. Not unheard of for a cold to pass quickly. Maybe he is also still suffering from the aftermath of the crashes. Otherwise really no point of dropping out BEFORE the rest day. Baffling decision.

A guy who won the time trial today means he's not ill, ok he didn't give to other Gc guys minutes but he beated among the best Itt riders in the world like Thomas and Kung
then tomorrow is rest and then two quiet days
Doesn't make sense
Even if he would not have won the Giro he could easily finish in the top 5 or top 10 with 2 stages won and more days in the pink jersey
Such a thing is disrespectful to the race

Oh no, just read it now. At least very well explains why he was not at his best the last two days. Hope he goes to the Tour. A solid buildup should be possible, for sure better than what Pogacar got (unless Covid hits him super badly now).
It’s hard to tell if it’s more him, his team, or his doctors pushing the decision. If it were me personally I would probably make the call after the rest day based on my symptoms, but they could have hard line rules especially considering the media scrutiny he and the team would be getting. If there really are no rules and he just won the TT I agree it’s at least worth waiting from a logic perspective.

I just learned Remco has abandoned the Giro.
It was clear to my mind that something was wrong.
This giro it won't be the same.
I wish him a quick and full recovery.

Health before everything. No need to push him beyond his limits now, it's not worth it if it gets worse over time.

I have no idea what the decision looked like in detail, but I'm very sure they didn't pull him out for no reason.
It's all about the tour from now on imho. The giro was a nice intermezzo but I think a 2nd Vuelta won't please him or the sponsors. That's finished business (for now). I don't think the strength of the team matters either. It won't be perfect anyway as all the preparation went to the giro. The tour offers him experience, an opportunity to hunt stages and just see where he ends up in the GC without pressure. Maybe health issues due to covid make a tour entry too difficult but I really hope that's not the case.

I'm not his fan at all, but this is harsh. There is no "easy" stage in a GT race, specially not for a banged up and Covid positive human. It's also smart since he could infect many others.

It's just horrible. Being that I'm Belgian and a big Remco fan I feel terrible. But I feel 5 times worse for Remco; all that preparation, effort, dedication, work, high hopes, expectancy, etc, all washed out in a moment. Remco is a young man and I hope to God he can pull through this and slowly heal his morale and spirit. I'm in the dumps.

I know they're not going to do it cause they're scared, but PLSSSSSS send him to the Tour. Win a TT and destroy some stages, why not.

Eagerly waiting for Remco's statement.
Now we know nothing more about his high altitude climbs, or his 3 week recovery. But he looked really strong the first days, I'll take the positive from that. This could've been an epic fight with multiple contenders.
