Teams & Riders The Remco Evenepoel is the next Eddy Merckx thread

Has Remco of the last two years ever cracked on a mountain besides this Vuelta? I recall times when he was distanced then clawed his way to minimal loss at the line.
Sure. There have been plenty of lacklustre climbing performances of him the past two seasons. Most times there were perfectly logical explanations for it though. Tour de Suisse, San Juan, Tirreno...

Thanks, Quack. I wonder if they shot this with all of them at the same time, or assembled the images in post-production. I'd not be surprised if it were the latter, given how it's composed and how the background works.
You think? Image doesn't look like they were all together. Seems a bit weird how some of the ladies are sitting, and how close their legs are. As well as Alaphilippe and Asgree to that other woman. And besides that, I would think it's difficult to get them all together.

Yes, I agree. That’s what I was saying.
My bad, I read your post too quickly. Het Nieuwsblad (Belgian newspaper) has some more info about it.

“Due to the riders' busy schedules, we brought together images from four separate shoots with some technical magic. Four riders were actually photographed in the Win Tunnel.”

Jai Hindley and Primož Roglič were photographed in the Win Tunnel in early November while at Morgan Hill for aerodynamic testing. Two weeks later, Remco Evenepoel and Kasper Asgreen were photographed in Morgan Hill. Evenepoel went on holiday to California with his wife Oumi and spent three “working days” at Specialized's headquarters. He did aero tests in the Win Tunnel, among other things.

Lotte Kopecky, Demi Vollering and Lorena Wiebes were photographed at a training camp in Spain in December, Julian Alaphilippe in Calpe.

As @Salvarani so eloquently put, this 'pithole thread' (at least I think he/she was talking about this thread) has been awfully quiet the last few weeks and has moved all the way down to the second page.

I guess that's good news because it probably means Remco has a good winter preparation without any distractions. But yeah, this thread deserves to be on the first page so I'm bumping it back up.

Looking very much forward to his first races in a couple of days/weeks!

He had a great winter without distractions. We’ll see the results in Algarve already.

He turned 24 and is past his prime. He better plans his retirement. The hype is over.

His Strava account confirms a remarkable winter, and it's rather surprising that this achievement managed to escape the meticulous scrutiny of journalists who dissect every facet of his life.

Annually, his team orchestrates an all-out test during the second week of January, tackling the same hill (Coll de Rates) with an identical warm-up routine (ramp-up intervals). This meticulous approach allows for a precise year-to-year performance comparison.

Remco generously shared his test rides on Strava for both 2022 and 2024. Notably absent from the record was the 2023 session due to his excursion to Argentina. However, 2022 stands out as a pertinent benchmark, marked by a monstrous season in terms of performance.

Let's delve into the specifics:
20222024
Off the Bike Period20 days29 days
Training Duration64 days56 days
All-out Test Result (15' test)26.9 km/h28.8 km/h

Comparing the two years on the longest KOM segment overlapping his test, the breakdown is as follows: 20" mid-test before the 100° turn, then 55" at the end:
Screenshot-from-2024-02-01-08-21-53.png

It's even more impressive if you compare it in relative terms:
  • In 2022, Remco went 10" faster than a Van Wilder who found his marks in his new team
  • In 2024, Remco went 30" faster than a confirmed Van Wilder who seems to be a man in form based on his first results
I'm really curious to see how this potential improvement translates in his first races but the greatest about this it that its team may have learned that Remco staying off the bike a little longer can lead to greater performance.

First of all, Van Wilder seems to be behind on form compared to 2023. This is likely due to his different schedule.
Secondly, Evenepoel was a little ball of lard in early 2022, weighing over 68kg (edit: misremembered) 66.5 kg when he went to Valencia.

A completely different discussion, following a bit on what has been said in the WVA topic. Since the Olympic RR is before the ITT, should Remco go all out during the RR? The profile isn't really suited to his strengths, and after last years WC it might make more sense to give him a free roll. Try to get away, but if it fails, just ride for WVA and don't go all out. Save some energy for the ITT.

Hell yes, he should go all out. The Olympic RR is chaos galore with teams consisting of a maximum of 4 riders. That's a situation in which he thrives. 10 meters and he's gone, never to be seen again.
