Yes, it was clear Vingegaard rode to win and Evenepoel rode to show that he's a very strong boy.

Not to say that Vingegaard's riding was very inspirational or attractive, but he doesn't have anything to gain from cooperating with Evenepoel. Somehow ol' Remco still doesn't quite understand tactics.
one day racer in his heart , stage races are not for him

i was on my way to get my braces adjusted when, at that exact moment, there was a pothole i hadn’t seen and that wasn’t signposted. that’s when i lost control of my handlebars,” evenepoel explained about his crash.

as for the damage? “i’ve got a bit of pain everywhere. my elbow, back, hips are all scraped up. we’ll have to see what the exact consequences are for the rest of the week. i need to let my body recover a bit now and then see this evening and especially tomorrow morning. the elbow has taken quite a heavy knock; we’ll see what’s possible.”

on his race tactics and the joint attack with vingegaard: “i rode to win. that was also our plan today with the crosswinds.” he then added a dig at vingegaard: “what others’ tactics are is their problem. i don’t pay much attention to that. in any case, it was clear who was riding to win and who wasn’t.”
"Braces adjusted" lol. He said he was switching hand position to the drops and then hit a pothole.

Hopefully there'll be no "it's not an excuse" phrases this week.
and yet it is a perfectly good excuse.

he crashes way too much and that is is 100% his fault.

but that does not take away from the fact that crashes and injuries take their toll. that's a simple fact.

This thread seems to be turned in to a place to make fun of him no matter what happens. It's not fair. His effort was remarkeable and his crash unfortunate. We can discuss tactics but in the end as a spectator we should encourage riders that show an uncanny willingness to race.
Like Pogi?

agreed.

no one is expecting MVDP not to have some excuses after his crash (and injury). But Remco is not allowed to have those excuses, not ever.

again, you can criticize him for "bike handling" or whatever, but the idea that after going over his handlebars he should simply perform at his best is ridiculous.

and his attack was DAMN exciting. Is that not what we want as fans?

once again a let down. Remco came down from altitude looking real good and fast, but now another crash. My opinion is that the rest of the Cataluña race is over for him as far as placings or victory. Usually after a crash his performance takes quite a dive down; sometimes it will take him months to recover back up to normal form. I hope I am wrong. This was the yearly crash he's been trying to avoid, well it didn't happen. More time lost now on recovery instead of improvement. We'll see how Team Bora handles the second Remco crisis of the season. Disillusionment for me again.

It’s funny how some fans are either blind or just don’t want to admit it.
He’s clearly talented, no doubt about that, but he’s also a huge whiner.
What makes him so annoying is that he seems to complain in every race, and when things don’t go his way, there’s always a new excuse ready.
He keeps building up expectations that he doesn’t really live up to.
If he were a bit more humble, he’d probably have way more supporters. As it stands, he just comes off as arrogant, annoying, and hard to like.
You can get away with that kind of attitude when you’re a true dominant champion who consistently delivers.
Otherwise, it just sounds like whining.

Very frustrating he crashed but tomorrow will not be a GC day now, so some time for some recovery.

He’s sure exciting, and aggressive riding is a great watch, although I think the tactic of going solo with Vignegaard was questionable, rather than driving the bigger group to take time on Almeida.

I think it's possible to both;

-respect his racing to win and encourage his attacking nature
-mock his tactical decisions on a day when he attacked 30km on the flat, pulled a gc rival along with him who barely did a turn, burned energy to barely held on ahead of the chasing peloton. On a stage before 3 consecutive mountain stages. In a race that he has hyped as his birthday spring goal for months.
