Do you know for sure that he’s heavier than in 2023 LBL? And even if that’s true, how is that possible given all his training and racing and coaching and support and focus on this race? Presumably he didn’t think he was “too fat;” I think he thought he could win.

They need to start monuments later in the morning. These speeds are so fast these days that Liège is going to finish before 16:00. That's no good for TV audiences on a Sunday.

All this talk about his change to Bora and Lefevre is probably ROFL with his season. Failure after failure with an anomaly in AGR. Remco hit his ceilling 2 years ago, way before Pogacar for example.

Anyone who was very active on the forum 2021-22 knows I was a big hater of his. But these days it's hard not to support him a little bit. There is humanity to his riding, he is basically the only guy capable of winning big races who isn't an npc robot with no charisma. I don't think what he did today was embarrassing at all.

Remco says he wants to be Pogacar but the evidence shows he wants to be Ganna. I’d say Wout but I think peak Wout smokes current Remco on climbs. There just seems to be a disconnect between the rider he currently seems to be, the direction of the improvements he is showing, and the things he is saying.
I guess consider me in the camp of thinking he should go all in on classics. Very tough competition in Pogacar, MVDP, Wout, Seixas, but it seems to suit him more than the Tour.

I agree. I am more of a fan of his now that he’s struggling than when it came so easily. Not surprising given I became a Wout fan a couple years ago, Roglic fan when he lost that 2020 Tour, Contador fan when he was fighting the Froome machine…
I like Paul now but that has a very short shelf life before it becomes boring, too, I’m afraid.

I don't think weight is the issue here, he was doing fine uphill last week (yeah climbs are a bit shorter in Amstel) and was decent in Catalunya. Today he was like the tenth best climber at best.
His climbing has gotten worse but he is looking better on the flat and sprinting-wise than before.
One has to wonder what the plan is.
One thought about it at Soudal already, even though the team often ended up getting most of the stick, but maybe he is just one those highly gifted people that maybe is not the most easy to manage.
I feel like observing him for years and his mannerisms tells quite the story.
Crazy that Remco’s best performance this year was arguably RVV. He was way closer to Pogacar there than at LBL. Who would have taken that bet?! I think next year his big goals should be:
Strade Bianche (test and tune up against Pogi and Paul)

P-R (gain experience and shoot for podium)

I have my opinion here and it's more nuanced (ChatGPT get out of my body), but seriously the team is terrible. It really is. They've got setup issues behind the scenes and whilst the peloton seems to be going faster and faster, this team is just stagnating.
You see this is just my eye telling me this but I don't see Evenepoel as inherently a worse rider than he was a few years ago when he was winning Liège but IMO the rest of the peloton is going faster every year whilst he's stagnating a bit. And it's not the switch from QS to RB that's done much to improve him relative the rest.

Based on results he's had a good spring. But he hasn't showed closing in on Pogacar, on the contrary it seems like he even lost his dominance against the riders who used to be a level below him. I mean, winning a bunch sprint for 3rd against the likes of Zanna, Bisiaux and Verstrynge shouldn't trigger conversation about how his sprinting improved but how he didn't manage to drop those guys in the first place.

He did ok today - he just can't stay with the Pogacar pace on climbs. Once he stops trying he regroups well - it was the same in Lombardia and WCs
I would say that his performance on La Redoute is a bit embarrassing today considering his past performance but I do agree in general. It looks like he does need to adapt to a new reality. Is it due to his crashes? Bernal is an extreme example but shows that the impact can devastate a career. If anything as steep as La Redoutte is an issue now, his options to win big races are much less as in the past.
Don't look to results. Look to performances. He was far from MVP, let alone Pogacar in RVV.
He couldn't drop Skjelmose and he was mediocre in the high mountains when we look to UAE and Catalunya.
