Vervaecke who also was in the big break said Remco did way more in the early hours than what you read/heard during and after the race. To keep the group going and wanting to keep the bonus minutes before the Wanne. But the last 90 minutes untill then the group started with attacks and almost nobody wanted to work suddenly. Maybe a gamble and overdone himself a little bit.

But he said himself this was not the reason, but I’m starting to think more of it now with how good Vervaecke knows Remco.

Don’t think he would gain any positions in the end, even with being fresher from the peloton. But also didn’t expect him to be at the lower end on the climbs, especially how he was riding in Amstel.

A win and 2 podiums. Result wise definitely not bad. Hope to see some improvement in the climbing part now, and I don’t want to hear before the Tour that he trained his explosiveness again.
If Vervaeke is correct, then Remco self-sabotaged himself with going in that move and expanding too much energy.

Maybe it doesnt matter being fresher anyway, if he didnt do that, but maybe he tries or is able to put up a better fight on Redoute.

Rather than being in the second group, he is inbetween and trying to close the gap. Similar to Ronde, but maybe with Skjelmose as help.

Maybe doesnt change the outcome whatsoever, but I would have liked to see that more than what we got.

I would still withhold he looked pretty strong in the end, so I don’t really understand his tactics during the race. In a way that has been Remco though, sometimes.

Nothing wrong with the thought behind the tactics, but the execution.
Only Denz alongside Remco, group syndrome (domestiques not working together) and remco (maybe) working whilst he should have drifted along.

I feel like we can conclude after this spring that remco is in good form but his climbing is mediocre at best. He's too bulky and needs to get slimmer. His sprint has improved possible cause of extra bulk. He managed a solid Amstel Gold win. But out of the bigger names he's won the least important stuff.

Del Toro won Tirreno. (maybe equal to remco depending what you value)
MVDP won Omloop and E3.
Seixas won Basque, Fleche and Ardeche.
Van Aert won Roubaix
Pogacar won 3 monuments and Strade.
Vingegaard won PN and Catalunya.

Looking at the results and manner of racing he's Top 7 atm. I can't quite put him in Top 5 atm. Given the overall impression of how the races went added in.

It was not planned of course to be in the break. It just happened. But Herregodts (wearing skin suit) said Remco was joking with him before the start that he would go in the break to make him work harder. And that they immediately knew Remco was in the break and let Wellens and Laengen wait for the peloton again. That they started pacing hard but the big break kept gaining time. So yes I think with 4’ advantage he sabotaged himself to do some harder pulls to stay away maybe and this was his chance to beat Pogi in a different way. Changing tactic with what happened, good try but didn’t work out well in the end with the group losing big time in an hour.

Classic Remco... How did he ever manage to ride Amstel so tactically well.

Unless I missed it, Vanthourenhout has been silent so far. Although they'll never reveal what happened behind the scenes, I'm curious to hear his analysis of Remco's season so far. And more importantly whether they see changes in their way of working.

I think it is unlikely any of us will ever be as aero as the 'aero bullet'. You can probably climb as fast as him though

With the special diet I might at least be a bullet sooner or later. Climbing doesn't help me much, our highest mountains in Berlin are 120m and 121m high, and they aren't even natural. (This didn't stop Jens Voigt from going up and down the Teufelsberg 100 times in 24hours to equal the elevation of Mt Everest on a bike once though).

You could try to eat 100 Diavola pizzas in 24 hours and see what happens. As long as it doesn't kill you, it should make you stronger in one way or another.
