The Tomo and Tan depreciation thread

Surely these clowns deserve their own depreciation thread. For many years Tomo has been a clueless junketeer only saved by SBS Managements lack of cycling nous, but recently he has been joined by Tan, a class A wood duck!

Last night Tan dropped this clanger...."I don't know why the schlecks don't work on their time trialling" or words to that effect. Really? What a tremendously insightful comment. Jeez I hope they aren't paying him.

Please SBS bin these jokers, more of the always good Keenan and much improved McKenzie please :)

know that Tomo is considered to be the driving force behind SBS's cycling coverage. on that basis alone, he should be untouchable to cycling fans.

the tan man on the other hand seems to say stuff that makes him sound like someone on the Street Talk segment of the footy show.

Tomo has driven the Cycling coverage for many years with SBS, so regardless of his faults, he continues to have my support.

On the other hand, Anthony Tan has no idea, he wasnt aware in his comments last night that Leoturd had two guys in breakaway, not just one.

Time for Phil to retire and bring on Matt Keenan in the commentary.

Your ****tin me arent you - surely the driving force is the unbelievable performance of Australian cyclists and the fact that there are now hundreds of thousands of cyclists on the roads in Australia. Tomalaris was a soccer comentator that they needed to find something to do and he has just sort of hung around like a bad smell.

How many stupid questions can a bloke ask? How many times can he ask a question that is the same as the one the bloke has just answered? He clearly has NFI.

Keenan however is a pro. He is intelligent and speaks well, and surprise surprise he actually really understands cycling. Just give me him, Dave Macka and Scott Sutherland for special comments and inside analysis and I am happy. Just dont let Phil Anderson come mumbling onto the set.

its really bad... you finish watching an epic stage with unbelievable efforts from the riders in the biggest race of the year only to pan to those 2 for analysis. it leaves you flat and deflated. Mackenzie was awesome last year - he has to come back, or even try and get Phil Anderson more (although the other night he struggled with his english?!?! what was that?) - he's level headed and doesn't gush over Cadel efforts.

And anoter thing - Mike should just accept that he is going bald. The sight of his wispy hair blowing in the breeze last night was a distraction at best and a disgrace at worst. The ruse is up Mike.

I don't mind Mike so much. Yes he's a baffoon and a bit cornball.

Asking Cadel in an interview, 'Do you feel you are in charge of your destiny?' I lauged. What the hell is that suppose to mean? Meaningless question.

However, Mike is part of the furniture and I enjoy watching him. He is enthusiastic in the way a child is about something they don't fully understand. But I think he is good for the broadcast, he adds the half-aware bungling fans' perspective. Like someone else said, he's like a patron off the street asked to pass comment. And I don't think thats necessarily a bad thing.

That Tan bloke though sheesh. He's the expert? Samu can't timetrial? What is that? Add that to his wooden demeanor and he is intolerable.

Still, I've said it before. If you want to see bad commentary look no further than Gus Gould. He is the be-all and end-all of dialogue driven by the mind of an idiot. I feel stupid just listening to that bloke.

Look its a real dilemma for the lad. He has a head that is too boofy for the shave, but what type of hair piece?

Personally I think he should go full "rock and roll" with a Brian Mannix style blond power mullett.

I like the idea of Tommo being the most rock and roll bloke in cycling.

Agree .......

This thread link needs to be sent to SBS ...

Matt Keenan, and Dave M for my money.

Anthony Tan ruins what has been a great tour thus far .....

Poorly spoken and factually incorrect. Be gone with you coat tail rider !!!

That came right after asking if he was more professional this year. I didnt even know that Cadel had issues with hookers and gambling. The look on Cadel's face suggested that he had hit a raw nerve so I dont know.... Insightful journalism.

Here's a thing for you guys to watch when Anthony Tan comes on the screen:

When he's talking absolute garbage, his middle finger on the hand holding the microphone extends. This is not a joke. Watch it tonight after Alpe d'Huez, and you'll see him bounce his right hand up and down to punctuate his words to stamp is factual authority on the discussion, and his middle finger WILL extend.

With that being said, Anthony Tan just speaks absolute garbage. His ability to ad lib is non existant.

not a look of raw nerve striking - more a look of someone restraining themselves from rightfully calling someone a tool.

How would you react if asked the same question? Personally I would ask Tomo if he was mentally unwell...

Sorry, i just cant buy this. Some suggest that Tomo is a sacred cow, re-mortgaging his house and working for free so that we could all watch Le Tour :p I see it differently, the guy saw an opportunity and went with it......nothing wrong with that, we all do it in our careers...but lets be serious here....Tomo hasnt created the interest, he has ridden on the coat tails of the sport and if he didnt do it someone else would have. Fair game.

Tremendous tip, i'll keep an eye out for "the" finger.

yeah right, that's why it's on commercial tv so often.

tomo is reportedly a keen cyclist and has long pushed SBS to improve its broadcasting of cycling. he has pull there. he's not the most incisive commentator, but at least it's on the telly. show some respect

Tomo has enthusiasm but after covering so many Tours now, you would think he had developed a bit more insight into tactics etc......I have no idea why Tan is there as he adds nothing. McKenzie is generally good as is Phil Anderson and Sunderland. Tan sometimes seems to know less than Tomo which is disturbing. Tomo does better when he is talking with Phil and Paul because they usually correct him. Give Tomo the intro and Keenan the analysis post race. I could live with that.

Gee I'm sorry, I had no idea that Mike was some type of Moses figure that had led the people out of the darkness with his incredible pull with the powers that be at SBS.

Gabriel Gate has been pretty loyal to the cause as well, but I dont want him talking about cycling either.

What he has done for the coverage in the past does not make him immune from having his performace analysed now. In my opinion it is time for Mike to move over and let those with more ability have a go. If you love Mike and his goofy view of the event then thats cool, but dont expect me to not call it like it is when he is a complete jackass.

How long does he have to do the coverage before he at least grasps some of the basic concepts of the sport? If you are willing to gloss over that then fine, but a lack of a ability after all these years to actually learn about the sport that he is "keen" on is a bit of a flaw for me.

LAUGH! so harsh.

+1 tomolaris dislike, unfortunately this year he predicted (in the official tour guide) that cadel would win (i'm sure more an effort in trying to appeal to as many aussie cycling fans as possible rather than a bit of shrewd analysis and prediction work), so if cadel wins he's going to look to many like a bit of a guy that knows his stuff.

rather than a mindless numpty that got lucky.

He is also a member of Randwick-Botany CC in Sydney. He's ridden with them a few times recently (of course before heading to France) and writes an article for their website every once in a while.

Rather hilariously he is also their club "patron". I'd be asking for a reimbursement of membership fees if i was a member of RBCC :p

ah, I forgot about that!

Here is the man's tips:

Evans
Contador
Basso
Sanchez
Gesink

Gesink (KoM)
Cav (Points)

Not a bad effort I must admit. Except for the omission of Andy who didn't impress Tomo with his pre-Tour racing (never watched Andy Schleck over a season in 2008-2010 then I guess). He tried hammering home the same point about Andy the last couple of days... ouch.

Tan definitely talks s##t out of his a##e. He has no idea.

Tomo is a figurehead style presenter, i have no problem with him as long as there is a REAL expert for him to talk to.

Phil & Paul's days are numbered. After getting sick of their mistakes and jabber i suggested on twitter to Stu Randall, SBS producer, to replace with keenan and macca this was his reply -

@lazy_dave @tobyshingleton matt and maca or matt and mcgrory have done flanders and giro for us. Its a long term plan for us.

Sounds promising!
