Why is this descent so **** brutal, why are they going so hard

The descent is brutal because there's way to much canopy, so it's way to dark. And then there's the road which is bad, with little bumps. And today they only went over the climb once, so they didn't get to see it in a more relaxed way.

And they're going so hard because it's the olympics. van Vleuten was on her way to win the Olympic gold, no surprise she was on the limit. It was a mistake in the end, but not surprising.

You do realize that they did a recon of the course in previous day, don't you?

Still not the same conditions, and it was probably at least a few days ago. Not to mention it started to rain. Of course it helps, but it's not the same as having done the descent twice before, at increasingly higher pace. It's a small factor, but still could have played a part.

Saw the crash again, it was really nasty...

Yeah really hoping she managed to roll with the crash. It could be really bad, but hopefully it looked a lot worse than it was.

Imagine Rujano trying to hold 33 sec over 5 km in front of strong chasing group

In his best days he could do that without problems.

A brazilian girl about to top ten here.

Kasia is burying herself but she seems empty and that gap seems to be holding to the ELB/VDB/Emma trio... Lizzie, Jolanda not helping the chase.

no way she stays away

If the timing is correct she probably will. 20 seconds with 2.5km, that's the kind of gap that can allow you to stay away from a sprinters peleton at full pace.

I think that Abbott is dying, it could be for the trio

Yeah starting to look bad, 2k ago it looked in the bag, but she really has nothing left in the tank.

Seems it's most likely she'll be overruled in the final sprint now.

Edit: Hoping Van der Breggen wins now, just so the win is for the team of van Vleuten.

Edit2: She did, well done. Still horrible way to win...
