I think he knew he wouldn't be able to follow Bardet's attacks, he's more of a diesel going uphill so just went at his own pace. Having said that, once he had Bardet in his sights, he needed to attack and try to get away before Cummings came back. Whether they would have held of Cummings, who knows, but as soon as it became a three-man battle, there was only one winner.

), at a time when Bardet was cooked and would not have been able to respond. Then for the next 200m or so, they stayed side by side like looking at each other. Like Anquetil-Poulidor WC '66 when Altig won. Except they haven't won a GT yet, not even a stage this year...Je meurs...Glad to see that Thibaut is still in good spirits after today.

The legs are there, he was easily dropping everyone from the break on Allos. And was actually descending well before his crash and after that he (understandably) was a bit shaken. Hopefully tomorrow or Friday will be Thibaut's day, he really deserves it.

Hope he doesn't attack tomorrow, too much descent, his best shot for stagewin is the Toussuire stage. It's a MTF stage, and here he can destroy the breakaway uphill without losing it downhill. Tomorrow has too much descent IMO and the winner will likely come from a small group (GC or breakaway) and Alpe d'Huez stage is too short, and GC guys will probably want a stage (thinking about Contador 2011 repeat).

Looks like a Mavic neutral support bicycle. You so seldom see them being used I sometimes wonder why Mavic still bothers. Publicity I reckon.
And yes, one is better off limping along on a ill-fitting bike than to stand on the side of the road having a hissy fit cause you can't get YOUR bike, refusing a teammates bike and losing three minutes.

His attack on the Col d'Allos was impressive yesterday and suggests that he could still pull out a win in a proper mountaintop finish. If nothing else, it would be a nice rebuke to the Eurosport commentator, who starts whining insufferably whenever the moto camera "forces" us to watch TP.

A Tour top 5 doesn't mean that much for someone who's finished on the podium. If he can't go for the Podium he'd probably better off going for a few stage wins, or trying to finish on the podium in the Giro/Vuelta.

Good point, but none the less, I'm sure that he will try to see, how he goes against the Big 4 in the GC, since only Nibali was there last year. And FDJ as a French sponsered team, has probably no interest in seeing Pinot try to win the Giro or Vuelta, because they understandably would prefer their big star riding the Tour.

It would have been easy for him to pack up after a disastrous first half of this year's TdF. Yet, in true Comtois fashion, Pinot hang in there, and he fought back. Well deserved win. I bet he learned a great deal about himself this year. He's young, he'll get better. In the future, he needs a stronger team, though. And I agree with Simurgh that as a Frenchman, he's stuck riding the Tour. Today, Thibaut Pinot saved his Tour...and mine .

As I already wrote it, he would be so much more successful if he wouldnt be a frenchman. He would ride the Giro/Vuelta and I think he could already win a gt if he wouldn't concentrate on the tdf. However after today he will be very happy that he didnt ride another gt

Why not trying a crazy attack? A very unlikely win but very spectacular attack which stays in the minds of the fans is still better than a 10th place, because noone will know who finished 10th in the lombardy 2015 in one or two years.Simurgh said:
