Did you read the bit where I said I'm not talking about his injury? Good. So let's put that to bed.

For the rest, it's a matter of conjecture. All race, I've seen a guy who is not tough enough to win, despite the clawing back of time he lost earlier. You have seen something else, fair enough. In my opinion, he lacks mental strength. I'll bet you a race up the Burway that I'm right.

Yep, I read that after your original post.

Each to their own, I do think this was Pinot’s best chance and unfortunately had nothing to do with mental strength.

I’ll take that bet, as you don’t mention otherwise I’ll be on my moto, get your wallet out

Bikes only. 4 pints before we start. Itll be a question of mental strength :D

I dont know, I look at Pinot and I dont see that axe-murderer quality that most serial winners have. He's a bit like Cadel Evans in some ways...cant keep negative emotions in check.

What kind of crap is that, he would have lead the Tour without the crosswinds. He was extremely strong this year, best man on two seperate occasions in the Pyrenees. We simply wouldnt know how far he would go today, although Im quite sure he wouldnt be able to follow Bernal, but never say never. Just sucks for him and the race.

Look at his palmares, all the races he won and tell me to my face that he lacks mental strength.

I'm devastated for Tibopino. Sad day for France, for Le Tour, for cycling. In many ways, he accomplished what he set out to do: show the true Pinot. And that is a classy rider, aggressive, fun to watch, a champion who can fight at the very top, with the very best.

What a tragedy. Being a fan of Thibaut Pinot is embarking on a roller-coaster ride. I hope he gets well soon, bounces back like he always does, and wins bigger than ever.

Now I need to find a cliff...

Ignore the troll. I feel your pain! Tibo did masses to enliven this Tour and reawaken enthusiasm for the event. His win on the Tourmalet is a decent addition to his already excellent palmares.

It would be a shame if he were to be cycling’s equivalent of ‘the best golfer never to have won a major’ but one of the great things about cycling is that there are many other achievements of great merit also - Monuments, classics, OG, Worlds and even stage wins. And he has his quota of those.

He does. Why should the Palmares matter?

Injuries caused by overload/overreaching are not that mysterious... On contrary.

He's been a gc rider for more than 7 years and he has not had that kind of injury. Considering that he is not sprinting at 1500w but rather going at a steadier pace of ~ 400w and for a long time, it seems unlikely to have a muscle tear.

And we all know the TdF is the only race that matters. You do realise we're talking about the defending Lombardia champion.

Apparently in avoiding a crash yesterday, he rode into/hit his thigh with his(?) handlebars. Afterwards he managed the acceleration to pull back Geraint on the climb, but the descent was painful for him and then even more painful in the evening. Everyone on the team was half expecting the worst today.

Pinot does seem vulnerable all the time in GT's though, he crumbled late on in the Giro when he was looking great for a podium. I do feel Bernal was the one clearly climbing the best in this 3rd week, yesterday he proved that when he stayed away by over 30 seconds after the Galibier. He would have lost even more time if Thomas just stayed where he was. This was the absoloute perfect chance to win the TDF, no Froome, Dumoulin and still a green Bernal and possibly even Carapaz. He may not get a better one, i am extremely confident on Bernal taking another step who knows what Pogacar does next year he is also a huge talent like Bernal.

I would love to see him win the TDF as he is imo one of the most exciting riders to watch. He and Alaphillipe are on another level they way they attack. Sorry to Kick Bardet when he is down but i have never found him as exciting as Pinot, Bardet always seems happy with a placing and Pinot actually attacks. So it will be nice if Pinot can take another step he clearly took a another step closer this year, the whole FDJ squad looked as good as they ever have this TDF especially Gaudu. Alaphilippe will probably take a big step next year aswell he is just getting better and better in the mountains.

So sad. He was in such great form.

Thibaut always bounces back from disappointment though. Let's hope he can do it again.

Wow, what a condescending attitude. In moments like this, if you aren't gonna say anything nice don't say anything.

Where does he go from here?

Maybe for the near future try to put together a similar end of season as last year.

Then definitely try for the Tour again next year.

Damn, I'm sure he would have won this race without that mishap :(

I'd say he was the best rider in this Tour until the abandon. Even with the damned crosswinds we was in it for the win. Now it's all over but some beautiful memories from this Tour should never be forgotten. Allez Tibo!
