I had this stage marked as the best chance for De Gendt, and he did it. After two disappointing seasons he's the hunter again. His climbing probably isn't what it used to be, but he still knows how to pick his goals. Cycling needs his kind of rider, because he's a personality. Van Houcke did the preparation work well. Important points for Lotto too.

How often do you watch a GT stage and see a rider basically pushing on the front all day and just stay and stay and stay there and have the energy at the end to surge for a deserved victory?
TDG led a GT peloton for around 3.5 hours up and down all day.
This is why he is one of the most popular riders in the pro peloton.
Well done, TDG and I'm sure I wasn't the only viewer punching the air as you passed the line.
A richly deserved victory!
