probably the usual "snorefest" of a route, but the Froome/Thomas inner team battle should be interesting.

Doubt it. They get along.

PdBF could already sort things out. If not, Tourmalet.
Thomas is heavily rumored to go for the Giro. And he implied he couldn't do 2 GTs in a row for GC like Froome, so I think it's gonna be Bernal as the backup at the Tour, while Poels gets a wildcard role in the Giro.

yes, they get along to a certain point, but these guys both want to win, so if they both ride to the tour, one is riding to defend his title, and the other is trying to reclaim his title.. I believe friendships or getting along is thrown out the door when it comes down to deciding factors of stages. Of course Brailsford will have to do his best Paul Koechli role and split up the resources. :D

The new Planche des Belles Filles finish looks good.
So the new gravel part is just a small extension of the original climb, where the plan is that they continue past the Station for a further 800 meters or so?
Exactly. What a legendary, mythical, unforgettable 2 minutes it's gonna be. Precisely what cycling fans love about the sport.

You are looking for something that isn’t there with these 2, they are friends on and off the bikes

If G does the Giro, then Dawg gets the A-team at the TdF (Kwia, Moscon, Poels, etc is not so bad).

Sigh. So what exactly is the point of this again? It doesn't even make it all that interesting.

The claim is that they can claim novelty and development even though the changes don't matter at all.

So the 3rd week will (probably) feature an ITT, a Gap stage and 3 mountain stages, that's almost as backloaded as 2011.

Thomas Vergouwen insists that there will be an ITT in Pau. I doubt that there will be another one.

UPDATE 23 October 2018 at 10.04PM : In the end, with the confirmation I received about the fact that I was correct with the time trial in Pau but that the stages planned in the Pyrenees would indeed have a stage finish in Bagnères-de-Bigorre first, it turns out that the finish on top of the Tourmalet will be on 20 July and that it'll thus be a stage between Tarbes and the Tourmalet.

It doesn't work like that. They want novelty then maybe the entire climb should be dirt. Less than 1K is pointless no matter where you put it.

They don't care if it matters. They care more about this kind of publicity than solid race design. Same issue with the Worlds route.

Vergouwen just stated, that this is his final course.

Still a shitload of sprinters stages, it looks like. Though some may be uphill like stage 3.

I read today that Nancy wanted a bunch sprint, so I expect no meaningful hills at the end of that stage. I hope they at least try to break it up some when there are hills nearby.

If they want to add a mountain dirt road why don't they use the one already existing at the top of the Tourmalet?
How high do you want to finish

Top of Pic du Midi would be nice :D

I just wish ASO just their time, energy and money on a good stage design instead of gimmicks like this. For that's what the new version of Belles Filles is. A big fat gimmick with little real value or interest.

Although Sky's dominance make it less probable with a good Tour anyway, looking at the rumoured overview map for next year, they could have designed one of the best routes ever.

The topography of France means that more or less all of the hilly and mountainous terrain is to the east of a diagonal line from Bayonne in southwest to Metz in northeast. Next year 17 of 21 stages is east of this line based on the rumoured map. They could have created a close to perfect tour with stages in the Vosges, Massif Central, Pyrenees and Alps spread throughout the Tour (which they'll perhaps do), but probably reduce the appeal of the route by short mountain stages, poor stage design and good climbs used in a useless way. Same procedure as every year that is.....

Re: Re:

Gimmicks sell, to a degree. I for one hope they go > 3000m within the foreseeable future. Use or pave some dirt roads above l'Alpe, Les 2 Alpes, or Val Tho or whatever. Use that global warming to your advantage.

Yeah. There really is no excuse to have 7 or 8 (semi)sprinters stages this time, but just watch...

There's no road all the way. Do you mean Col des Laquets? Logistically (or perhaps space-wise), it just about do-able, if they close it off from spectators.
